Party rhetoric and media-driven polarization makes US politics appear much more varied than it actually is, based around an imaginary center with far-left/communists on one side and far-right/fascists on the other. In reality US politics is firmly right wing and increasingly so, and that has long included the democratic party and its affiliated media.
No clearer example of this than the current administration leading a genocide of middle easterners and it's laundering through a liberal media that has spent the past year (though it's more like the past 2+ decades) dehumanizing muslims and arabs, yet only one side is presented as the fascist/white supremacist threat (in part because conservatives are more outspoken about their fascism).
Ultimately both sides feed into the spectacle because exaggerating the differences between the two parties and gaslighting voters with existential threats (foreign interference, fascist takeover,
communist takeover, etc.) every election cycle helps to maintain the facade of democratic legitimacy.
