I didn’t know about this subculture before and started to follow it a bit several months ago. It’s absolutely shocking and quite funny and sad at the same time.

Those videos where you see a random guy/woman identifying as Calabrese/Pugliese or whatever and the moment they pronounce those regions you already known that their (great)grandmother probably came from there lol.

Then if you meet a Italian in real life they always just tell from which city they are

Can't say the same. For Estonian, Lithuanian, Azeri, and Ukrainian women/men I've met, they have been VERY specific about their ethnicity. For the ones who were Jews, they identified as such, too. i.e. "Lithuanian Jew" or "Ukrainian Jew" versus just "Lithuanian."

Actually the Sopranos had an episode highlighting how they are definitely not Italian when visiting Italy.

It's a misnomer though. Surely there is some sort of Italian American culture, it's just not Italian. I mean they've even got dishes you can't find anywhere in Italy.
