Agree the outrage is justified but where is the equal outrage for the deaths in major cities do to homicide? Those numbers absolutely dwarf police brutality deaths.

It is, this was a few days ago so I don't know if its been proven false yet or not. It was reported in quite a few hot spot locations so who knows.

The homicide numbers are ridiculous, and people are desensitized to it. One of the reasons for so much outrage at police killings of unarmed civilians is rather ironically, the relative rarity of it. It’s still rare enough that people have the energy to put on the face of (mostly) mock outrage. Don’t get me wrong, lots are also justifiably outraged, but the majority, just use it as a convenient arguing point to express outrage and indignation over.

Anyways, ‘murica will never solve its murder rate with people so heavily armed. You may not like this, I know the second amendment is treasured, but it’s the stark reality, guns are incredibly easy to get and incredibly easy to kill with. Stricter gun control of some sort would help with this, but will never fly down there, so it’s a trade off People are willing to make I suppose. When you combine gun culture with the other issues America faces, caused by both sides of course, like massive inequality and wealth disparity, the endless war on drugs, a terrible urban public school system... you end up where America is on gun homicides.

Back in the day the Democrats weren't bad. They upheld free speech, were anti-war, reasonable when it came to the economy, and quite highly attractive to moderate voters. But now they're only a party of race baiting, division, and yellow journalism, so they'll lose votes. If Trump wins in November then clearly they are the epitome of failures.

No argument there. This election should be a cakewalk for anyone semi-competent.

No political dogma is behind this. Only thugs that are taking advantage from this situation.

I witnessed this firsthand as a Berkeley grad student during the 25th anniversary of the People’s Park protests. I got shot at by rubber bullets as an observer as a result.

Some people come to do their thing. Then there are bored teens from the nearby suburbs who think this isn’t a private riot and anyone can join in, so they decide to go bash and shop for kicks. Hijack movements every time.

Lol defunding the police? That’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard.

It is. I can see demilitarizing the police. 9/11 gave out too many tanks to suburban police forces. But defunding is stupid and shows a blatant disregard for city budgeting and the need to keep the peace. Especially when the problem is Amy Cooper and bad cops. Defunding does not solve that.

Let’s not forget that anybody who says “all cops are bastards” are no better than racists.

We are all outsiders, and that's really the key, you can't just have an educated stance and base it on anecdotes. And if floyd was white you wouldn't hear about it. Once again, just because you feel frustration it doesn't mean it's justified, they have been told all their lives they are victims, and the victimization machine upped it a notch with Trump as prez. People still bring up slavery as a reason why they have failed in life ffs.

Now onto police brutality, do we hold policy makers to the same standards, say for example if we tasked someone to reform the police and they royally fuck up and cause deaths, will they be going to jail? Would you want to take on that responsibility if this was at stake?

Statistical anomalies spread like wildfire now. What seems like an epidemic is sadly an exception. Which isn’t to say that black people face possible aggressions every 5 minutes in their lives. It’s just too overly simplistic to paint this as a problem of cops killing black people.

The easy solution, and i think you are sick of me repeating it, is just like how you are able to criticize Muslims, whites, or men for perceived deficiencies in their behavior/views you ought to be able to do the same with blacks without being called a racist. Also stop telling them they are victims. Regardless of your socioeconomic status, i am sure you will not raise your kids to see themselves as inferior and with deck stacked against them, especially in a place like america. Where people far worse off still make it every day.

It serves no one any good to be coddled and have their bad behavior condoned and made acceptable. There are bad cops. There are bad black people. There are a lot of great people among both. It’s too easy and convenient to pretend otherwise and it perpetuates nonsense that is unsolvable.

I don't think the left vs right or we vs them rhetoric is really helpful here. It only further adds to the division between people. Many of us will always think we are better, smarter or/and morally superior than the person next to us. This is true regardless of the political beliefs we hold. Most of us generally tend to be better at being critical of other people and their views, but lack the ability to put our thoughts through the same critical examination. They are my thoughts after all so they must be perfect.

I feel these kind of huge protests morph into covering more than just one issue. People with all kinds of problems, sorrows, ideologies and motivations join in. They're not necessarily a homogenous group at all. What is often common is that they all seek for some change. The spark that gets people to voice their concerns can be raising the price of petrol or it can be a police murdering a black man. I'm sure different countries will have different aching points that can lead to things boiling over. Internet and the social media also play a huge role. I doubt the the graphic content, rumours and such do much in terms calming tensions down.

i think a lot of a it is because the (semi) public forum makes a competition of it where people compete to standout by being the most "principled" or whatever in a competition for likes/ retweets amongst their circle.

Attention/ quick validation is a drug some people particularly women.
