Yeah, but at the end of the day... if both are lying, what difference does it make? Maybe some people enjoy being lied to in a calm and collective fashion.

The difference is that I do not think McCain would have nuked Iran during a tantrum. With Trump we can all see stuff like that happening. A modicum of mental balance and dignity ought to be the least a president can give.

In terms of diplomacy it also helps if the rest of the world does not think your president is a lunatic. Completely alienating a neighbouring country during your presidential campaign also does not bode well for your actual presidency.

Well the difference is that you can at least have a reasonable debate with Mccain, or even the likes of Bush jr. & senior or Paul to name a current example. With guys like Trump, Carson or Palin, this isn't even the case.

And Paul is probably at a similar stage as Bernie a year ago, he would fill the halls at his speeches with his supporters to a record-breaking extent, but was polling at 5% at the same time. The question is whether Paul, in the current Republican party can ever move beyond that level in the same manner as Sanders has done.

Indeed. And when it comes to actually getting your policies completed, it's key that you are able to negotiate and have a conversation with both your supporters and opponents. Especially as an American President seeing how little power he has when it comes to everyday politics.

It's often what separates those who understand the machinery of politics and those who just enjoy yelling at the door. It's so easy just being a whiny bitch - the internet is full of em.

Out of 10 times in any thread how many times have you seen someone here change or adapt his view according to arguments from his opposite side and not say the same thing he started before any discussion began.

That article is pure sensationalism, which is no surprise coming from the New Yorker. The clowns in Oregon are just one "segment" of the anti-establishment right, and not everyone on that side of the spectrum shares their views or believes in their initiatives. The DHS unit the Republicans shut down was spying on Americans without any probable cause apart from their political beliefs, so everyone should be against that -- whether you're left, right, or center. But of course, the left is becoming more and more authoritarian, as seen with various pundits glorifying programs such as these. They're also seemingly fine with the IRS targeting certain individuals based on political beliefs. So this is no shock. At the end of the day, many of the current administration's policies on domestic spying, outright lies, and overall shadiness creates mistrust and fringe groups such as the Oregon clowns. Really, they should take the appropriation for the DHS unit and create a new one that investigates overall corruption on both sides of the aisle.

And they are discussed only in one paragraph of the article. I don't know where you drew the conclusion that anti-establishment right and Oregon guys are just one entity. In fact, it calls the far right as "a diverse, sometimes contradictory landscape of radical ideologies"
Also, anti-establishment sentiment do not exist only on the right. There's a growing support for it on the left either. Being anti-establishment doesn't mean supporting likes of Trump necessarily.

They're trying to paint everything the far right stands for as "radical." What is radical about balancing the budget, staying out of foreign affairs, and not trusting known liars in Washington? Is blowing up Iraq and threatening to bomb Iran less radical than that? You tell me.

To be completely honest with you, I prefer Sanders over everyone but Rand and maybe Kasich. It looks like a Democrat is going to win the general election no matter what at this point though, so it might as well be him over Clinton.
