Haengeboffer is smart, but he's wrong on this point. He seems to have forgotten that we interpet words by the meaning that is generally ascribed to them.

For example: Bush's speech is clearly not bigoted. Bush might be. I might be. But his speech was not.
Yeah I really don't get your point Soren, there's nothing wrong with that speech.

No volte face? Same ol opinion by same ol people? Booooring :p
Well, people are unlikely to change their opinion on an issue of this importance. Especially when that opinion comes from a certain mindset. Doesn't mean that debate is futile. I feel like Andy could realise this is not 1791 any day now.

Kinda crying over spilt milk over a lame duck president while skirting the more pertinent topic though.

This is not the time to be making speeches of why voters should elect you instead of the incumbent.
It was a retort to Obama. Not an election speech, if you will. Points still stand. The hypocritical left needs to own up, just like the Bush folks.

Wat

And a lot of leftist thinkers majorly blamed public measures in the past for the financial crisis, but realised that different, and in many cases more government intervention is needed in order not to repeat the events.

Also, the US doesn't really have a left. Don't call the Democrats left.
We sure do. Just because they aren't as left as Mao doesn't make them the right. That's ridiculous.

If more government worked in 2008, then surely it would have worked by now. We've had plenty of stimulus.

Great speech. More politicians need to hit home the basic respect and understanding for one another.

Reminds me of my mother who been in this country for nearly 24 years, telling me that now (after Paris attack) since 9/11 is the most uncomfortable and hostile time to wear hijab, how unwelcome ordinary ppl are who wouldn't pay her headscarf no mind before. Especially as a teacher.

Breaks her heart that people can't distinguish between ordinary people and un Islamic to the core inhuman ISIS filth.

It is great, but the opposite of what I was arguing about

Yeah, if you look at the Scandinavian countries, we haven't really found an answer on how to cope with the rising globalization, which really put pressure on our beloved welfare state. Nationalism rise, the right wing takes advantage and - unfortunately - Islam is the main object for attack.
But I gotta say, when it comes to extremism (especially right wing), Sweden is on a whole different level than your neighbors.
