Khamaneei, I think, always hated democrats more than republicans in that in his mind, although democrats and repubs' policies are essentially the same, the latter is more open about who they are. Remember this? “Iran does not trust America. Underneath their velvet gloves, they have hidden iron hands.” Though he directed that towards Obama, I think one incident he never got over with (even to this date) was his giving approval to Khatami's government to cooperate with the US against Taliban, which was soon followed by Bush's introducing axis of evil and putting Iran (who were closely collaborating with them in Afghanistan) on that list. I have no doubt in my mind that it also contributed to Khamaneei's support of Ahmadinejad and the radical approach the regime adopted after Khatami. Shame.

I think in general he's scared of neo-cons. But Trump is no traditional Republican anyway. I think the propaganda benefit he gets from Trump is totally worth the risk in his calculations.

Haha, how about appointing Christian fundamentalists and white supremacists in his cabinet and in his security council? How about rushing through a travel ban without understanding its consequences? How about destroying America's relationship with some of her strongest allies in a matter of days? How about signing executive orders that will give banks and financial advisers unfettered access to defraud their customers? How about undermining the role of the judiciary at every possible opportunity? How about lying and making things up on a daily basis? How about signing off on a special forces raid in Yemen without having all the information in hand, resulting in the death of dozens of innocents and a Navy SEAL?

Even one of these points is enough to make a reasonable non-partisan person to say " I told you so",
