There's actually a lot of examples of this that I bring back from Europe. The produce at farmers markets in Europe is much, much cheaper and better quality. So if you go to a great restaurant in Paris, you'll likely be spending less on average than a great restaurant in the US, not just because of the tip. Then you look at bottled water - I could buy an Evian or similar quality for a Euro over there, but in the US it's like 3 bucks or more. Transportation generally costs more, apart from gas prices. So there's a lot of inherent inflation in the US that nobody really calls out for various reasons. A lot of it might be a scam, but we don't have as many subsidies as farmers and others in Europe, so part of it can be explained by that major difference.
Still - there's no reason why Americans can't cook decent meals for themselves at home for a good price. A lot of it is just poor diet in general and laziness. I could easily buy some chicken breasts for $6 and serve it over some kale and tomato salad I grew out of the garden. It's not that hard. Some Muricans are just stupid and lazy.
