im having trouble removing search engines from that function. how do i do it?
If you go into the folder where firefox is (it'll be something like C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox), there's a folder called "searchplugins". Go into that.

Each search engine has a .pgn (or a .gif) and a .src file by the same name (eg. google.gif and google.src).

Delete both of those.

And like that, it was gone.

ram hogging
cant use keyboard scrolling shortcuts (page up page down etc)
bookmarks folder acting funny
installed search plugins not working coming up
loads of new extensions incompatible
etc.

I've had a few too. Part of it is extensions not having been updated to support 1.5 yet. It's not been anything too severe though.

adblock not working properly
True. It's been improving since it was updated though - it was terrible. Check to see if it's fully updated.

ram hogging
A bit alright. Close it when you're not using it and it doesn't seem to be a problem. Genuine problem though.

I haven't had any of those. For the last one, I'd suggest you just reinstall them (delete them in the folder C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins, then reinstall from https://addons.mozilla.org/search-engines.php?application=firefox).

loads of new extensions incompatible
It happens. As they're updated, you'll see that go away. Short term, this extension can force compatability, though it's not exactly a garuantee!

Firefox 1.5 for the most part is flawless to me for the past month or so. I have a bunch of extensions, all are certified to work with 1.5 though. One thing that tends to happen sporadically is that FF loses track of what url is open in what tab. So reloading a page brings up the new url in the location bar, but the new page doesn't display. Closing/moving tabs also doesn't work then.

Thanks for making these problems sound so small. ;)

Truth be told, 1.0.7 was incredibly stable, worked flawlessly. It just set the bar too high up for its own good.

They are for the most part. The extensions will improve slowly, as random extension writers get their asses in gear. The rest of it will probably have to wait for the next release, though they're steaming ahead on development of that.

I hope so. They are in for some serious competition when IE makes a new release. And Opera has become free, which might siphon more conservative of the open-source clients.

But has anyone tried Sunbird? I tried it and its pretty sexy:
