Well, it depends on his competition of course, but I wasn't that impressed with it. I mean it was good but it wasn't a performance that touched me.
Frankly I think Hollywood is very reactionary and if it wasn't for his death and subsequent prolonged eulogy he'd never have gotten it. But here everyone was sad that a young man had died who hadn't seem to have done anything people would hate him for, and thus the whole "circus".

That says a lot. Do you think it would have been if he hadn't died? As I remember the atmosphere everyone was mourning his death and almost searching for a way to celebrate him. Then his movie came out and everyone automatically loved him in it. I never saw a single critic. It seems to me they were determined to celebrate him.
Maybe not as certain but I'm sure he would have won the Oscar even if he hadn't died. He had the whole movie on his shoulders. We have similar cases in the past; James Dean for example was nominated for Oscar for the movie Giant but he didn't win it even though his death was much more shocking than the death of Ledger.
I've read plenty of negative reviews (I searched them out to provide some fresh perspective). Very few of them made any sense. One guy even argued that he was inferior to Caesar Romero. I think he must have been a bit out of touch. The only valid criticism of him I read was that the role isn't terribly varied, but if Hanks and Hoffman can win best actor Oscars for even more uniform roles (and that's just picking the two who stand out in terms of role immersion, for obvious reasons), I don't see it standing in the way of a supporting actor Oscar. I thought it was Oscar worthy.
