I finally saw Slumdog Millionaire. I liked it but I still think Benjamin Buttons was better.
That whole violence-in-the-slums-turned-big-story genre has been done before. I thought Slumdog was pretty good. But it ain't no City of God, that's for sure. (Even Central Station was a better movie, IMO.)

In some ways, I feel the accolades for Slumdog this year are trying to make up for movies like City of God when they were released and largely overlooked.

Meh, it's the Brad Pitt effect, lassie :D
Considering the fact that I can't stand Brad Pitt then the effect should have been negative not postive huh? ;)

I had the same reaction. Slumdog, as you said before, was similar to other movies before it. If it wins over Benjamin Buttons I will be suprised. The acting, the story and everything else on BB was much better imo. BB was also a more unique story, unless of course you count an episode of Star Trek Voyager which did not go into much details at all. :p

I haven't seen it, but Slumdog seems to have a big feelgood part of the story that's sold well with people. City of God didn't really have that.

Seth Rogaine is the Marlon Brando of our time.

My wife said the same thing. As she put it, "City of God had no redemption."

It's the reason why whenever I'm about to make it with a hot chick, I leave the porn up on the walls to determine whether to cut off her head or not.

The difference between slumdog and city of god is that slumdog is less confronting. Its easier to look past any horrors in the movie and focus on the story. When i watched city of god i was waiting for the next depressingly gruesome scene but when you watch slumdog the romance and the 'rags to riches' theme is able to take an affect on the viewer.
