I see. So the producer thought "hey Newman would be great but he could never pull it off, he's 'too American' I have no faith in him". Bummer.
That's one way of looking at it. I was going more for something like: "Newman is a great, versatile actor, he could pull it off, but seeing him as Bond simply wouldn't feel right. Kinda like watching <insert great brittish actor here> play <insert big-all-american icon here>. :p

That's what actors do. They are not British, and yet they pretend to be. The technical term is acting. :p

Newman could have been a good Bond, even though he should be dark, but in the back of one's head would be the nagging voice saying the accent doesn't fit.

He would have been a great villian though: Blowfeld!

I'm aware of that. :p But this is not a case of "could he" as it is of "should he". And he should not, just as John Wayne should not have played, I don't know, King Arthur. :D

Just finished Mongol. I really enjoyed the film as I am very unaware of the history of Genghis Kahn's early life. Setting was breath taking, the score perfect, and the action intense. I watched it without subtitles and even though I couldn't understand a word anyone said, the film was easy enough to follow. I attribute that to a well written, well directed script. The director really impressed me in this one. It could have easily gone "Golden Horde" which would have been on long battle sequence. I'm glad he chose to follow the beginning.
