You know there's a big controversy in China about that movie. Essentially, it's along the lines of "How come the Chinese couldn't make a movie so well suited for the Chinese market, but instead some American studio did?"

Personally, I have enough trouble trying to understand how so many people in China can have monosyllabic names like "Li Ping" -- especially when there's well over a billion people in the country. What's the chances of there being 247 other Li Ping's in your graduating class, right? :confused2 It's gotta be confusing...

I saw Dark Night just now and just got home.

My quick review:

* Good movie

* Heath Ledger was really good in it. But I even liked Michael Caine -- and I generally don't like Michael Caine.

* Gotham = Chicago = my home town? Too funny.

* Fantastic opening bank robbery scene, a few great other scenes.

but...

* Way too frigging long: needed editing

* The whole Two-Face thing was grafted on like an extra head to this movie. Could have done without it. Batman vs. The Joker is enough of a marquee that we don't have to make this some kind of Superfriends.

* Gratuitous sound effects, explosions

* It made me appreciate the greatness of the master Joker all the more

Cesar Rules.

* I actually fell asleep somewhere between the Joker parading around in a nurse's outfit (great scene, btw) and the final scenes. I honestly have no idea what happened to the Joker in this flick. Please PM me if you can share. (I'm actually serious -- I had a bit to drink with dinner, it was getting late, and the movie ran way too long that I crashed out in the middle of it. A better movie wouldn't have done that, however.)

you seriously don't like a classy actor like Michael Caine?
I liked him in the original The Italian Job. But otherwise I think he's kind of a bore. Worse, he's been a movie whore for most of the 1990s and the early 2000s. He was in everything, it seemed -- and a lot of bad movies too. John Candy was like that in the 1980s before he kicked the bucket of KFC.

Saw the Dark Knight and I althought it was long I didn't think it dragged on too much to the point i'd fall asleep.. Ledger is awesome in it but Bale's performance leaves a little bit to be desired

I got that, indeed he acted in stupid movies just to make some cash, but you can't blame him, it's not that he was refusing to take major roles for major movies. But I love his work a lot, one of my favorites.

I liked "Shadow Run", it's very underrated at IMDB, it's not a great movie, but I like it, if he bores you then I don't expect you to like it :D

The original Italian Job really sucked from an acting point of view and Caine set a new high in just how annoying a person can be. I was shocked to witness the same actor in "Batman Begins" where he was wonderful.

Yo Boz, is the Scottish in "Braveheart" authentic? I figure I know the answer but just to be sure :D
nah it sounds about as scottish as burke's irish/scottish/dick van dyk in mary poppins accent:crazy:
Finished Braveheart. Sophie Marceau did not, I repeat, did not save this one. :D

Out of all the Scots the Irish mofo was the coolest :D
it is a blatant exploitation of a legend,manipulated into a smaltzy hollywood vehicle

i never really used to like MC at all,was subjected to a lot of his earlier films when i was younger and found him to have all the charisma of dry-wall. on refection that was the sort of role that was expected of him and in recent years he has shown he actually has a lot of charm and humour

anyway i went and watched the dark night last week and i have to say that i thought it was very very good, though maybe not as good as batman begins. however, the performance of ledger was simply fantastic! for years i have hoped for a batman movie with a joker that fits better into the darker tone of the comics. what we got was a brilliant portrayal of a psychotic,remorseless,nemesis for the dark night.
i do agree though that the whole two-face storyline could have been left aside, IMO the story was being laid out for the next film and became a bit of a sideshow here. they probably could have put down the foundations for 2-face to be the main villain in the next film. that said it was probably a necessity for the ending which does set up the 3rd film nicely

Yeah, sounds more like "talk like a pirate" day than anything authentic.

I haven't had a great deal of exposure to Scottish, but a while back I saw a talk given by a Scot and his accent was delightful. :D It was very sort of toned down, which accentuated the syllables that are different. I don't know where he was from in Scotland, cause I'm sure that makes quite a difference.

Sorry, I can't discuss dark night cause I haven't seen it yet :D

Ledger was awesome. But hey -- it's the role of The Joker. It's pretty fat and juicy for an actor, really. Throw in a invocation of Cesar Romero's laugh (which Ledger did really well) and some of (most ironically) Michael Keaton in Beetlejuice, and a dash of demented -- and it's a really impressive performance. I wouldn't go into the ridiculous, posthumous accolades that some have. If you think Ledger put out one of the greatest acting performances of the past decade, you can't tell your Philip Seymour Hoffman invoking Truman Capote from your :pado:. They're not only not in the same ballpark, they're not even in the same sport. (Comic book movies? Seriously...)

But it's clear that the hardest role in these is Batman. So many have tried and failed (including the aforementioned Keaton). Now I think most comic book movies are a retread genre that needs to go away fast from being so tiresome. But what either the directors or actors don't get is that the greatest redeeming dynamic of the Batman story is that Batman is as much a psychopath as the supervillains he battles (The Joker, etc.).

Batman is just as much a head case in his funny costumes, flying around town, playing superhero with no real superhero powers per se, as all the villain head cases in town. He has far more in common with them than the folks of the Bruce Wayne world.

And not one Batman movie, and one Batman actor, has yet been able to capture that.
