Messi has never been best for 4 straight years, two of those awarded years were a joke, especially when snider should have won it.
Is it won because of the accomplishments you've made that season? Sneijder won more (treble), but there was no way in hell he was technically or physically a better player than Messi. Sneijder won more, but Messi was and is better.
Exactly, saying Sneider should have won then, is like saying Neuer should win it this year.

Lol at still going on about Sneijder. This is an INDIVIDUAL award, not a collective one. sneijder wasn't even best player in Italy then (mediocre league season), or even the undisputed best for Inter.

i thought Robben was better that season. he carried Bayern to the final almost single handedly and if Ribery was playing in the final maybe things would be different. he also was great at the WC. best player in the KO stages for Netherlands, scoring against both Slovakia and Uruguay (match winner). if only he scored that vs Casillas :moan:

Continuity? The guy was the best player in the world for 4 straight years, if anything he's just proving he's human for being off form the past two years. I don't think he's regressing, I think its human that he can't keep up the insane levels of consistency he had those 4 years where he was the best player in the world. Credit has to go to Ronaldo though, he is indeed improving every year, if he wasn't playing at the same time as Messi he'd have been the best player in the world for the past 7-8 years, thats crazy.
One wonders what would have happened if Ronaldo had been all drugged up like Messi though..

Dang the way Ronaldo is going this season he's going to turn this debate on its head, crazy football from them both though I still say Messi, Ronaldo is on fire this term and opening back up this discussion.

We can all argue for days, but it is a fact that Messi is currently the world's best player, his new role under enrique requires him to assist in chance build up as well as midfield dominance, a job which was Xavi's and Iniesta's in the past years

Only reason we are arguing about this is because both are the best in their respective positions. Messi & Ronaldo play slightly different roles in their teams, and you cant really compare one to another 100%

That being said, Messi can lose a leg and still play better than ronaldo :D

Its hard for anyone to argue with a straight face that Messi has been performing better than Ronaldo in the past year. Perhaps only in the WC, but Ronaldo trumps him in all other competitions by a country mile, I really think the debate is pointless this year, Ronaldo IMO is so far ahead of the competition it isn't funny.

That being said, I find claims like Robben was better than Messi to be even more laughable. When people say that its because intentionally or not they are comparing Robben to his own standard, and comparing Messi to his previous levels of performance, when you do that Robben had a very good year by his standards, but Messi had an extremely poor year by his own standards. However you compare their performances and productivity directly, its not even a contest, I really think even Robben would laugh at the notion that he performed at a higher level than Messi last year. Because Messi and Ronaldo are so far ahead of other players, even when they have poor seasons by their standard they are still considerably better than other players.

Well said. Interesting to note is that Pirlo, a completely different player than both Ronaldo and Messi, said in his biography that is makes no sense to even compare other players with them.

Ronaldo and Messi make 50 goals a year every year. There is no one who comes even close. As Pirlo rightly notes, one of them should win the Golden Ball every year as it is crystal clear they're the best.
