Matt, I don't think there's ever been a more complete player than Maradona. Scoring (with foot, head, hand, etc), dribbling, assisting, leading, running, carrying teams single-handedly to win titles against better and wealthier teams, both on club and national levels. It was even more off base than the Zidane vs Gerrard argument. I think the Messi vs Ronaldo comparison is still the best you could bring up. Ronaldo is obviously the more complete player but it's hard to say who's the better player. I'd go for Ronaldo though.

i ll give the debaters that maybe pele was more complete, since he was equally good with both feet and can head better, but platini?

More complete meaning having a wider array of qualities (technical, physical, defensive, versatility, whatever). So yeah, U would say Gerrard has a greater variety of useful attributes than someone like Zizou despite Zizou being obviously the greater player.

I say Maradona since he's regarded by most as the best ever. I obviously wasn't around to watch him, Platini and Pele, so going by what I see from video highlights, read, hear, etc., by their playing styles, I would say at least Pele (o forgive me for saying Platini) was more complete yet Maradona was better, which is why he was "carrying teams single-handedly to win titles against better and wealthier teams, both on club and national levels".

So Messi could be "the Maradona" and Ronaldo could be "the Pele".
i can tell, especially since you stopped talking about it

I think it's more about having more and more qualities of what a player would need to excel in the position he plays. So as an attacking player, it's got to be scoring instinct, technical abilities, passing abilities, ability of shooting with both feet, freekick skills, headers, positioning, vision, etc. Platini had nothing on Maradona in most of those areas. Then it comes to the mental ability of maintaining the form for your national side. It's hard to beat Diego there too. Not to mention his ability of leading the teams he was playing for as well as being the main man in carrying relatively weak teams on his own to win titles.

What you're saying just sounds like you're describing the better player, but I suppose you have a different meaning for completeness.

I agree. Messi's a man's man.
I still dislike him more than Ronaldo though. I don't even dislike Ronaldo that much anymore. Hated him more in his United days.

I don't hate either one, but Messi is definitely the chiller dude. Ronaldo looks annoying to be around.

Pirlo would be the chillest dude to chill with by far though. Gigi and DP too.

After their latest displays, I don't see the sense in a Messi vs Ronaldo poll. We should make it more equal and rename it to a Barca vs Ronaldo poll.

Ronaldo should win that poll too, though.
