He didnt, we have no left wing back starter and prolific finisher...
that was the priority of our mercato...
He also failed strategically, as it was proved that Quaqs and Matri are more of a dribblers, than finishers, he misjudged them and keep failing to repair his mistakes...
after asamoah performances at lwb we suddenly stopped beeing linked with them.

seems like he and conte decided its gonna be him

considering the performances, cant blame him

He didn't get rid of the deadwood players. He didn't sign a top striker for CL, even though we were promised it. He didn't sign a good LB/LWB. He signed Lucio from the snakes, which was unnecessary...

So I give Marotta 5.5/10

If we'd get Armero before he was cup-tied and Dzeko/Llorente/Jojo/RVP or another Good to great striker.. then He'd get 9/10 despite missing out on selling the deadwood.

Vucinic-Dzeko
Armero - Marchisio - Pirlo - Vidal - Isla
Chiellini - Bonnucci - Barzagli
Buffon

This team would be really really great in CL!

7/10 is a fair rating IMO.

Had Marotta signed a top striker it would've risen to 9/10.

The positives are obviously:
1- The deal to bring Asamoah and Isla from Udinese, both have great futures ahead of 'em.
2- Signing great youngsters like Pogba (for free), Boakye, Leali and Masi.
3- Signing Lucio for free is a positive, at least on paper.

Negatives:
1- Failure to sign a top striker.
2- Failure to get rid of some unwanted players.

I gave 7 cuz I still remember how the Milan fans went apeshit when we signed Asamoah and Isla
that was the highpoint of my summer
after that it all went downhill

Went with a "7".

On paper, I'd say we look better, more complete compared to last season. Squad is a bit more compact as well, probably not as many guys who'll barely play, so that's another plus.
I personally see no real panic buy either, though Bendtner could be argued to be one. Still, I can see why they added him to the team since, in theory, he does provide something the others don't. Can't say I like the player, but it's basically a no risk operation, so that's ok with me.
Extra point(s) for not shelling out a shitload of cash on 1 individual player.

And major props to him (and his team) for not selling (one of) our best players as well. That in itself is challenging enough imo, considering the current state of Serie A.

Points deducted for signing Lucio. Not that he's such a terrible player, but I feel we could have looked elsewhere. Not a fan of leaving stuff to the last day either. Actually, I hate that.

Edit: why oh why do I read so much criticism for Marotta when more than 90% rates his mercato as 5 or higher? Does not make even the slightest bit of sense.

It's not like 5, 6 are great, it's kinda meh when you convert it into words. You can't rate it with 4 when you bought Isla, Asamoah, Pogba and Lucio.

Everyone wanted to see a top striker as it was the priority for majority of the forum, yet we bought Nicklas.

He did a lot of good, but at kind of inflated prices. 36 mil € for Isla and Asamoah ? 15 mil € for half of Giovinco? I would prefer this operations to be done at a 25% discount. But still this are positives will improve our team.

Signing talented youth players once again. This is a plus.

Signing Lucio and Bendtener for free. Shrewed moves. Maybe not most likeable players for fans but great for rotation.

Getting rid of the deadwood. OK, maybe Melo is a question mark because of his price but a player always has the upper hand in this kind of deals.

Signing a TOP CLASS striker. We tried and failed this is true, but this year the pool of this players moving was small. The only players that fit all the criteria ((percieved) top class, moving/looking for a move, "available", striker)needed were at the end of the day only: Llorente, RVP, Jovetic, Dzeko:
+ Llorente for 36 mil € was a joke. He is an average player in a attacking minded league. Great PASS by Marotta here. Did not cave under pressure.
+ RVP not realistic at that price point. Signing him at 10 mil € would be bad in the long run and in the short run would ruin team chemistry
+ Jovetic, we met the "gentlement" agreement but Fiorentina screwed us. More than 30 mil € wouldn't be justifiable. I see him in bianconero next year.
+ Dzeko, wasn't really available.

So a lot of good things, not a single bad move. But ultimaly we didn't sign the TOP STRIKER we wanted and there is a feeling that some players could have been cheaper.

I give this campaign an 8.
