I tend to agree with that reasoning of course, but context is key here. My comment was based on the assumption that the rumored duration of the contract of Depay would be for 2 years. If the alternative to that is Milik for 10M + salary, I only see the former as the only viable option, unless you want to argue having Kean is better than both. I don't consider this transfer to have the same repercussions in case he flops as we did have with Rabiot, Ramsey or Arthur for example which were for far longer contractual periods with bigger financial damage.
Latest rumours are Depay wants 8,5 m plus bonus. And I even read also a 3-year contract.

Even if it's 8,5m without bonus; our current salary cap is 7,5m. We shouldn't break it for someone like him. Not even close.

what leverage does depay even have? Who else is bidding for him? I doubt any club would give him a fixed 7M, nevermind 8.5. Good luck to him getting anything near that next summer if he stays at Barca, where he’s not part of the project. Just wait him out.

Milik really isn’t that bad as a vice Vlahovic but we need wingers too if they don’t sign Memphis.
Look, as an overall footballer and in someone willing to accept of a rotation role he does make some sense, but what form are we to expect of him if he is being rejected by a mediocre team like Marseille and has a probability of getting injured higher than average what good will he be to us afterall, even more so when him arriving could mean us not moving for someone else that might be better or at least with more potential to bring some fresh enthusiasm to the team, this sounds somewhat acceptable only as a last minute panic buy after all the other preferred options failed through, and even then would still be meh.

his numbers the past year look pretty good for a backup though. He’s injury prone but when he’s on the field he’s in the 75th percentile in goals and in the 80th percentile in both expected goals and assists. He’s also great in the air, which is pretty valuable considering Allegris inshallah tactics. The injuries are a concern but we wouldn’t be relying on him to start.

His current contract with Barca...? It might all be rumours. If he signs for less, great.
