awesome...

though, like fred said, I'd put Pirlo and Gattusso as starters. Maybe even Panucci ahead of Oddo as Panucci is on form.

i dont know how any of you could include Legro in the squad after the terrible season he's had with Juve.

I'm impressed Fred... :thumb:

I completly forgot about Cassano and Pancaro (who's been great with milan)

:star: Great Formation :star: though it funny (i never thought i'd say this), but i think this team has TOO much creativity and attacking power.

THe argument for putting Camo would be to have another midfielder and one less attacker, but i think Camo doesn't help out the D that much. he's often stationary. Miccoli would be better.
As for Cassano. I think he's a good option because DV has been off form. Cassano can score just as many goals as DV even though he isn't a forward like DV.

Baggio is a must to sub Totti as i dont think Miccoli can handle that position. (though one may argue that Pirlo or Fiore can take that spot :undecide: )

Gila is very young, but he's on top of his game and Inzaghi just has sergeory. I'd take a fit Gila.

Although the 4-2-3-1 is the system that Trap has gone with throughout the Euro qualis, he has played 4-3-1-2 in the last two friendly games and I think that's the tactic he'll be using in Portugal.

GK - Buffon, Toldo, Peruzzi
RB/LB - Panucci, Oddo, Zambrotta, Birindelli
CB - Cannavaro, Nesta, Ferrari, Adani/Materazzi
DM/CM - Pirlo, Perrotta, Zanetti, Gattuso
RM/LM - Camoranesi, Fiore
AM/FC - Baggio, Totti, Del Piero, Cassano
SC - Vieri, Gilardino

starting line-up:

Buffon (Toldo) - Panucci (Oddo), Nesta (Ferrari), Cannavaro (Materazzi), Zambrotta (Birindelli) - Camoranesi (Gattuso), Pirlo (Perrotta), Fiore (Zanetti) - Totti (Baggio) - Del Piero (Cassano), Vieri (Gilardino)

You forgot about Pancaro because he's injured and won't be going to Portugal. It's a real shame as he has had a fantastic season.

aha... you .. i knew that ;)

double forgot! :D

Birindelli it is then .. :undecide: (hopefully, Zambrotta would be play all the games.. Italia have enough firepower up front. i doubt Zambrotta would move to the right wing)

i agree but why Perrotta and Zanetti over Pirlo and Gattuso?
Perrotta and Zanetti played exceptionally well everytime Trap played them together, they showed an amazing understanding as if they have been playing togehter for years.

Even though Pirlo and Gattuso play in the same club, they play in a different formation (diamond) with Pirlo infront of defenders to distribute the ball and Gattuso on the right with Seedorf on the left and Kaka upfront, behind the strikers.

I also think Gattuso is a bit overrated in Italy, its true that he gives his best on the field but I always see him as a headless chiken chasing the ball without much efficiency. Pirlo's weakness is that he sometimes gives the ball away a tad too much, especially when he is in the 'soft' mood like the match against us in the first leg.

Perrotta and Zanetti are also tactical better and thus I'd prefer to play them ahead of Gattuso and Pirlo any day of the week.

Trap considers old guard
Friday 30 April, 2004

Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni has admitted that Roberto Baggio and Paolo Maldini could make Euro 2004.

Baggio returned to the international scene this week so that he could play one last time for the Azzurri before he retires.

The 37-year-old is unlikely to be named in the 23-man squad for Portugal but Trap has left the door slightly open.

"I spoke to Baggio without any problems," said the tactician who ignored him for the 2002 World Cup.

"I have players like Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano in his position. There is also Alberto Gilardino who is doing well.

"Wednesday’s game against Spain was a great occasion and I just hope that no one gets injured from now on.

"If I do have players who pull out then I will replace them by looking at the quality of an individual and not their age."

Trapattoni also confirmed that he still wants to lure Maldini out of international retirement to boost his defence.

"I have an appointment with him at the end of the season," he added. "We’ll see what happens.

"Paolo would like to be there but he also wants to maintain the promise which he made to himself and his family."

Yeah, but only if Baggio and Maldini sit on the bench. Imo they could confuse things as it will be extremely difficult to play them as well as Totti, Cassano, Del Piero, Cannavaro and Nesta. Remember what happened last time Italy played a three man defence?
