It takes a brave man to bench Gatusso. IMO he's the best ball-winner in Italy, undeniably now that Davids went to Barca.

I'm surprised, you actually think Perrotta and Zanetti performed? God they're the most dull and boring and uneffective combo I've ever come across (ok, that's an exaggeration but you know what I mean)

Rino Gattuso and Pirlo is mucho better.

Rino Gattuso and Pirlo is mucho better.

Look at how well we've played with Zanetti and Perrotta in the midfield, I think we won every game with them in....

I think we'll see Maldini in the final 22. IF he doesn't play in the next two weeks, that would be a telltale sign that he's changed his mind.

Trap rules out Gilardino

Italy boss Giovanni Trapattoni won’t take Parma hotshot Alberto Gilardino to Euro 2004.

The Under-21 international has netted 19 goals in Serie A this term but the Coach believes the tournament is too soon for him.

"Gilardino is a young player with excellent technical qualities," he told German magazine Kicker.

"He’s already shown his abilities with the Azzurrini but his time will come after this summer’s finals.

"He is still very young and you need a certain amount of experience in a tournament such as this one."

Although Trap closed the door on the Juventus target, he admitted that he still hopes to recall Paolo Maldini out of international retirement.

"Paolo is an exceptional footballer," added the boss. "He has great personality and there isn’t a better pairing than Maldini and Alessandro Nesta."

Trap also commented on his own future as his contract with the national side is set to expire this summer.

"I’ve received a few offers," he explained. "I could have already signed one or two contracts, but I want to wait until the end of Euro 2004. I want and I must have a free mind."

The veteran tactician has been linked with moves to Spurs, plus former clubs Inter and Bayern Munich.
