Matías Agustín Silvestre (born 25 September 1984 in Mercedes, Buenos Aires) is an Argentine footballer who plays for Calcio Catania in the Italian Serie A, also captaining his club. He also holds an Italian passport.

Career

Boca Juniors

Silvestre began his career with Argentinean club, Boca Juniors, where he would go on to make his league debut on 23 March 2003, in a 3–1 win over C.A. Lanús. Silvestre soon was inserted into the Boca Juniors starting line-up and between 2003 and 2007, he went on to make 63 league appearances, scoring six goals. He was used as both a central defender and a right full back, during his spell with the club. Following an impressive 2007 season, Silvestre was transferred to Calcio Catania in the Italian Serie A.

Calcio Catania

During the 2008 January transfer window, Silvestre transferred to Sicilian club Calcio Catania on loan. His first six months at Catania was not so great as he was not part of then-coach Silvio Baldini's starting team, making just 11 appearances, just five as a starter. His loan, however, was made permanent in the summer of 2008, after Walter Zenga was appointed head coach, following the sacking of Baldini. He soon became an instrumental part of Catania's first team and was a major influence on their fairly successful 2008–09 season, as the club avoided relegation for the third consecutive season. Silvestre continued to shine during his third season in Sicily as the defender went on to make more appearances than any of his temmates during the 2009–10 campaign. He formed a solid defensive line-up with the likes of Pablo Álvarez, Nicolás Spolli, Christian Terlizzi, and Ciro Capuano as Catania recorded their record breaking points total in Serie A, finishing in 12th place with just 43 goals conceded in 38 games. During the 2010-11 campaign, Silvestre earned captaincy at the Sicilian club, following the sale of Giuseppe Mascara to Napoli on 31 January 2011. He has made 116 total appearances for his club, scoring seven goals, five of which have come during the 2010-11 Serie A season.

    For anyone who has not seen Catania much. This is their most reliable and best defender. He has been used all over the field in the past, but has settled into the right side CB this season. Only missing one game in the 08/09 campaign due to suspension. He often comes forward to challenge the entry passes into the Forwards, and is usually aware enough to get back into a defensive position. Has great header clearences, and works very hard to win balls back from whistle to whistle. His deep passes are very quality for a CB, and has top level technique for a CB. On his off days his overaggression will cause defensive problems if he doesn't time that entry pass defense well. Will result in either a foul or good scoring opportunties for their opponents. He is definitely a risk taker and when he has a bad match it is very noticable. Where on a more frequent good game he is efficient in shutting down entry passes, and gets counters started with his Long passes. Could possibly be considered for *Sliding in the future. He is actually really good in 1v1 situations, his only problems come when he gets over aggressive defensively.

    lo zio: Silvestre is arguably the leader of the defensive line. All in all he's a good compromise between technique and physical strength (aswell as stovini, but so far silvestre has done much better than stovini, imo). Very good heading abilities, more than decent vision, and quite a good long pass accuracy (which is vital for their counters). I would never trade Silvestre with Bovo, but I wouldn't mind having him in my team either.

    I think he would be cover, an alternative to Barzagli since Sorensen will likely get sold.

    Who knows though, if does well enough he could certainly replace Bonucci.

    He's a CB, some teams want him so I don't know if he'd accept being Bonucci's backup. For 5-6m I try it out or just swap him with Martinez. I would think we'd get him for backup but if Bonucci doesn't cut it then he'd start.

    I will probably be a minority here but I think Silvestre is better than Bonucci. He may start as Bonucci's back up, mostly for sentimental reasons, but will probably soon earn a starting spot, as soon as the italian starts showing why he is not Nesta's or Canna's heir :)

    either Zapata or Silvester are a must for Juve next season ... Aguero won't do much good up front if the back is leaking goals like last year.

    Do we really need another CB? We could just use the ones we have right now. If the boneheads decide to loan Sorensen, then this may be needed. But I don't really think we need another CD.

    i think they re very similar players, good with their feet and score a lot for defenders, however i think bonucci will have a rebound season his sophomore year. And if we wanted a young defender from serie a i d rather we go for munoz.

    I also like Munoz and think he would be a great young talent to have to learn from playing along more experienced players for another couple of years, while being introduced more slowly into the starting 11 ... but just don't think he is ready to be a starting CB for a team like Juve yet, considering he is still learning the ropes and is relatively inexperienced.

    As for Bonucci, I also expect him to do better than last year ... in no way do I think he is that bad of a defender, it's just that I don't think he is as good as Juve thought he was when they got him last year, more or less the next Cannavaro. Even then, however, there is a question mark regarding whether he will indeed bounce back - he is still a very young player, and considering he is coming out of a sub-par season, it may well take a streak of just 2-3 bad games for him to get derailed and have a mental collapse.

    Basically, Bonucci and Munoz would be, for me at least, question marks as to whether they would be up for the job next ear and I think it's a bit risky to have two such players on the same team at once ... Juve can basically find themselves without a 2nd reliable defender for half a season next year and that could end up costing the team dearly in the race for the top 3 spots.

    Players like Zapata and Silvestre, on the other hand, would provide the right mix of relative youth and experience, at a low cost - Zapata is on his last year of contract with Udinese and could leave for less than 10 mil (Villareal is rumoured to be close to signing him for 7 mil + a player), while Silvester is actually reported to be very close to Juve for 4 mil+Paolucci.
    Either of these two would, at least for me, provide more assurances for Juve at the back and could prove indispensable should Bonucci not have a bounce-back year. The low cost of such a transfer would also not interfere with Juve's other plans on the transfer market ... would be a win-win situation for Juve, me thinks.

    some transfer news regarding Silvester, which may have gotten lost in the above post:

    GdS gives Silvester to be one step away from Juve - 4 mil+Paolucci - and the transfer is expected to be completed as soon as Paolucci agrees personal terms with Catania.

    i share most of your opinion, however i dont think bonucci is as much of a question mark as you make him out to be, he played for 2(motta) most of last year and had an off-form chiellini next to him. and i pick munoz both for his upside and willingness to warm the bench in the immediate future(matias prolly wont).

    not disagreeing with the above really ... my issue with Bonucci is mainly the tricky situation he is in right now, would require a great deal of mental toughness from a young player like him to manage to bounce back this season - it's a make it or break it year for him, I'd say.

    not sure what the deal is with Paolucci ... I read the above rumour in Gazzetta, page 6 ... who knows, could be just one of those rumours :)
