The argument is whether we were as good as that Bayern side. Imo we werent. Their 1st 11 was stronger and their bench as well. The likes of Robben who was prolly among the top 3 wingers back then and Costa pinned us down and Muller took out Marchisio out of the game. You cant impose your game when you face superior opponent. They will destroy you 9/10 times. In the return leg we played on counter which was correct approach. However, we had a perfectly valid goal disallowed. With 3 goals up, we progress to QF.

Extra time could have been avoided if we didnt have a legit goal disallowed, if Evra didnt decide to dribble infront of our box or whatever reason. There isnt just 1 incident that decided the outcome.

We did counter attack in the 1st leg and scored 2 goals. You also have to consider mental aspect, our players faced Bayern few years before and it didnt go well so in the 1st half of 1st leg we were low on confidence.

Marchisio and Hernanes were different players so what worked with Hernanes didnt with Marchisio.

Marchisio was a better player, not sure a better passer. Hernanes kept the ball better under pressure and found more space inbetween the lines that relieved the pressure from the backline. Marchisio being a better player doesnt mean he was a better fit against Bayern.

motta is having an excellent season, he gave that team an identity and is keeping them on the right track, but as @MikeM already pointed out, what makes motta difficult to assess is the potential of that squad. zirkzee, calafiori and even ferguson have talent for days, i'd be happy to have either of them.

We didnt counter attack? We scored 4 goals. The tie went to extras and while we had Zaza they had the likes of Coman to come off the bench. Lol
