Its football, we were lucky to win some games and this time it was the other way around, lets see how we react in the return leg. Proper response would be going to France and pedal to the metal until we're 3 goals up.

But all in all winning the EL is a pretty unrealistic pipe dream for this team. Not necessarily because the squad lacks quality (although its hardly a dream team), mainly because the squad lacks preparation. Inevitable that we'll run into a team as good as Benfica and get our asses handed to us.

Yesterday, in the live-thread, a couple of members disagreed with me that the team (needlessly) slowed down after we took the lead, and that we were seating way too deep when we weren't supposed too. @Post Ironic @s4tch
The fact is that we did exactly that and it was confirmed by Allegri too. Allegri: "We could’ve done better with the way we moved the ball around. After taking the lead, we stopped, we moved the ball in slow motion. Only once we conceded the equaliser on a counter-attack did we switch back on again."

What I don't get is, why did we do it? I blamed Allegri for it, but it seems that he's blaming the players. On the other hand, after the match Danilo said this: "We need to be more determined and also to learn when to slow down or speed up the tempo.”
Danilo is obviously talking about us needlessly slowing down after we scored and I read a criticism for Allegri between the lines.

But who's to blame for this? We did it gazilion times this season. I agree that a team needs to slow down and speed up during the match. But for us it looks like we're doing the slowing down immediately after we take the lead and we speed up once the opponent equalizes or takes the lead. Predictible fucks, that's what we are. Yesterday we had to push and push after we scored, it was clear for everyone who watched the match. Nantes were confused and they were gonna concede more. But we stopped. That has to be on the coach, right? Why is the coach blaming the players for stopping and moving the ball in slow motion, then?

It’s habits. if you’re used to slow tempo, sitting back and hopefully snatch a goal, your fitness levels and focus levels default to that even when sometimes that’s not the actual plan. That’s how he sets us up against minnows all the time the team gets comfortable and go into their default setting.

It’s easier to do the reverse going from high tempo and running a lot as your norm to the occasional game where you sit deep.

Habits and fitness start in training and are reinforced in the easier games and so are totally his domain. You’re absolutely correct

The kind of game that we would’ve won 9 times out of 10. Gameplay was quite good in the first half, slip of Bremer costed us the win. Max made a horrible impression during the post match interview as posted above.

Dude, we've been doing this for as long as Allegri's been here, even in his first stint. That's called 'never get out of second gear' and that's why it's so hard to keep up with others, especially in CL.
The team just checks out and that's it. It's Allegro's fault obviously as he for years has been talking about 'management of the game'. This is literally it.

This is something that happens to a lot of players and teams. When you take the lead, you tend to be a bit more cautious and sit back a little. If you've played football before, I'm sure you've witnessed this first hand. Very often coaches will yell players forward, but it's almost as if a sort of mental block is preventing them from doing so. Imo it's mostly lack of confidence really, I don't think it's a conscious decision at all.

Yes, our problem isn't this. Our problem is inability to counter attack. There were 3-4 moments when we caught the ball and had huge space in front only for our players to fail to make a simple fucking pass/throughball. I've been saying this for years, our players' instincts are all fucked up. I haven't seen a proper through ball from Juventus since Del Piero to Thuram back in 2003 ffs.

It's quite odd but it's been a problem with Max for a while bar his first few seasons

I have also seen multiple times Max telling the team to push up and not sit back so deep. My thought is probably that it's a misunderstanding. They probably take Max's instructions of calma calma calma As slow down when he probably means just don't rush the build up. But regardless if that has been an issue for multiple seasons it's down to the coach being incapable of getting his ideas across.

I find this most interesting to be honest, a collection of awful wing backs has really coincided with Allegri's teams playing awful football. It's also interesting that he is calling this out publicly now, I don't recall many times where he has been this vocal with his criticisms especially of being overly defensive.

I don't think that's true really. He's one of the few coaches, who will admit his team played poorly and will emphasize we need to do better. That is as much an admission of responsibility of a manager you are ever going to get, because it's his job to make the team play well. Throughout the bullshit charges against us, he has also been very vocal about his support which tells me he isn't afraid to get caught in the storm.

This being said, I do think we need to part ways after this season. Just not for that particular reason.

You see this happen so often. The players get scared, because they don't want to give the lead away. For some reason it makes them sit back. Coaches know this is a bad idea. Rather than about tactics, this is about mentality. We need to be fearless. We need to think about 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, not worry about conceding.
