Some rather silly people here severely underrated Pjanic too.
All three were winners. And had the attitude and intelligence to play at the very highest level. I agree they were getting up there in years and replcements were needed… but we replaced them with rubbish and we have scrubs now, with mostly shit attitudes and pretty low intelligence on the pitch. Hopefully Locatelli is the beginning of fixing the Tootsie midfield debacle.

I don't completely agree with what Mina is saying about our midfielders not filling the gaps at the back. Bentancur for example is very good without the ball defensively and he often for example drops to right back when Danilo/Cuads are out of position. His off the ball work is the main reason why he still plays even when his on the ball skills have completely abandoned him during the last 12 months.
I do agree that we struggle to control and dictate the tempo of the game for some periods, more precisely it usually happens towards the latter part of the game. I don't know whether that is down to mental or physical fatigue. Perhaps it's a bit of both i.e. we get physically tired and lose just a little bit of concentration, which leads to lost duels + rash decisions on and off the ball.

Big improvements on our truly awful and terrible CMs Pjanic, Khedira, and Matuidi. 
Sarri was a complete misfit to our club and in many ways stupid, but one thing he has going on for him, is, being the last coach to actually win the league with this rotten team. So lets get back to that feat and then move on to also being competitive in CL again.

Just because Pjanic POTENTIALLY could earn a place in our starting lineup, because we have absolute shit players, doesnt make him any good, there is nothing really to celebrate with how his career nose dived. And one thing is for sure, seeing his lazy attitude on the pitch is not something I miss. We have enough of his mental build in the squad already in the form of Bentancurd and Rabiot. He COULD be a marginal improvement to the shit we currently have, but with his wages, there should be much better options on the market, even in Serie A (if just our scouts are doing their jobs).

Yeah I think generally when people talk about defensive and attacking teams the determining factors are the height of the defensive line (how high the team presses its opponent) and the amount of ball possession, especially in the attacking third of the pitch. I think the aforementioned way of determining the defensiveness of a team can be a bit limited as well.
I would consider that more defensive, which is what I prefer.
Allegri is more balanced. The block plays deep but he always keeps 2 strikers ready to counter, and their only thought is to score goals.
On the flip side, there are teams that press to win the ball and score less goals somehow (Sarri's Juve). I would consider Sarri more defensive than Allegri as well.

I don’t want Pjanic back either. But his attitude under Allegri from 16-18 was a far cry from the shit we see from Rabiot, Bentancur and Mckennie. He worked his ass off and was one of of our best players in his first two seasons here. A major part of why we could play a two man mid so often.
He’s finished now imo, and was terrible last season and under Sarri, and with high wages it would be stupid to bring him back. But he’s still probably a better CM than any of the trash we have not named Locatelli
I suppose goals scored isn't a great metric either because that depends on finishing ability, ability to create chances and quality of chances created.
I would judge a team's defensiveness on what they do without the ball. So yeah, number of players behind the ball as well as the factors I mentioned - any combination of them is possible.
