Allegri: 'Ref decided the tie'
By Football Italia staff

Max Allegri believes referees cost Juventus the Champions League quarter-final with Real Madrid in both legs. “We deserved extra time.”

The Bianconeri conquered the Bernabeu 3-1 and had been 30 seconds away from extra time, overturning a 3-0 first leg defeat, when Cristiano Ronaldo converted a very soft penalty.

“I don’t want to judge what the referee did,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium.

“I feel bad for the lads, who did well in Turin for 60 minutes and didn’t score the goals they did tonight. The penalty tonight was basically the reverse of what happened on Juan Cuadrado in the first leg… I said even at the time that incident would decide qualification.”

He was referring to a penalty not awarded for a trip on Cuadrado in stoppages.

“We deserved at least to go to extra time, as we had two substitutes left and they could give an important push in that extra half-hour with Real Madrid tiring.

“Either I had to make changes on the hour mark and go hell for leather, or I wait until extra time and have enough time to get the situation sorted out. We weren’t even really at risk late on in the game.

“Now we have to focus on the Scudetto and taking that home. We have to be stronger than these things and let them fortify us.”

Allegri was asked about the 4-3-3 formation he used at the Bernabeu this evening.

“The best system depends on the match and various situations. Dybala was missing and at times he can play down the right.”

He got almost everything right... almost

I can understand saving Cuadrado for extra time, but Marchisio was badly needed in midfield. Khedira was great at home but a passenger today.

what else is he supposed to say? our players, after experiencing those 180 mins, deserved to have someone standing up for them, they didn't lose against Real alone
What he said was fine. Agree 100%. Don't recall him so vocal before.

How can you blame Allegri for this?

I get he gets the blame for the first match at home, but tonight? No fucking way.
The fact of the come back and the new offensive style and everything else is amazing credit to Allegri. A demonstration that he can fire up the squad and set it up offensively and dominate a super top team.

Those that "blame" him are just upset he didnt bring in any subs when we looked so tired and needed to waste time. One sub with a slow walking player leaving and another entering could have sealed the deal till ET. I dont think they are not impressed that he got us inches close to the greatest comeback ever in general.

You forgot the Bayern away game already

I hope he used the chance to punch him in da face
Probably he wont change I agree. I am being optimistic in light of how great this comeback is and how frequent the calls to play offensively have become compared to a couple of seasons ago.

Easily the best manager we've had for a long time, however he needs to sort out a few things. No I'm not talking about leaving out the subs, but just the following:

    1. Drop the respect we have for our opponents.
    2. Work on the mentality so that this Juve is firely from the get go. I get the feeling that we leave things until we get desperate. Tonight proved we are better than Real. Just imagine if we were like this from the start? Tie would have ended in Turin.

    Never mind though, great manager.

I am tired. Just tired. Always almost there. But never getting there. The same with Barca, Bayern, Real and today. We almost got it. And didn't get it at the end.

Today tactics were spot on. You had the luck with your side. Being 0-3 on the 60th minute. And then what? Held 2 substitutions on the bench for extra time. Who guarantees you that there will be extra time? Why postponing for later what can be done right now? Just sub a winger and a midfielder in. That would have made a huge difference. Maybe win you the match. But even if not, it would keep Real far away from your box. Every chance in your box increases the chances for a penalty or a goal.

I really have no excuse regarding the changes. We had Marchisio, Cuadrado and even Sturaro and Asamoah on the bench. That was the worse risk management assessment ever. Just a wrong way of thinking. Not trying to finish something earlier to trying to increase the possibilities of something that might or might not come. If I was running a company and Allegri was my employee, he would be fired tonight. None should compromise Plan A to increase the probabilities of Plan B.

Disappointing. Going back to Turin tonight and everyone is talking about the referee fuck up instead of talking about our own shortcomings..

Wow. I bet if he had made the 3 subs and it went to extra time, you'd be one of the first guys to criticize Allegri for not having anyone to bring on.

Do you having something to base that on? Or it's just a wild guess?

You never compromise Plan A for Plan B. You have 3 grenades in your belt, if you die having used only one, well its bad management at the end.

In previous years, he had the excuse that he didn't have good players on the bench and had to bring in Lemina as a winger. Today he had no excuse. He had 4 players sitting on the bench that could fit his plan.
