Against good teams the plan is to suck the life out of the game and then force our way to a narrow win. We are usually pretty good at this.

Kind of pathetic to be honest. Would be nice to dominate a match with good football and go toe to toe with the opposition. The one match i feel we actually did this was against Bayern, even though we unfairly lost in the end.

We only did this in the first half though, we ran out of gas in the second half and camped in our own third before they inevitably equalized. It was a horrible feeling.

The closest we’ve come to playing good football against an elite team was against Real in 2015 when we beat them 2-1 at our ground. The possession and shots were about equal. We attacked them with confidence and won. That was the one of the most satisfying wins I can remember.

Madrid was simply better than us, both tactically and with the squad they had. I felt the first half we gave it a good go but was simply outplayed and gassed in the second. Also being gassed aside as stupid this may sound I really think something might have happened at half time as our approach suddenly took a turn from the positive end of the first half of mandzukics goal which I thought was odd. At that stage from previous seasons w Allegri that was uncharacteristic so I dont know if those locker room rumours are true.

Man on man on paper we would not make it against these teams which is probably why Allegri has to resort to playing how he does to grind out results although we have proved our own capabilities with wins vs barca madrid and to an extent game vs bayern. It would be nice to have the same approach in a single, final tie but thats where our players’ mental strength come into play which may be lacking unless you are someone like Mandzu who was miles above everyone in the team in that regard.

Im hopeful we can do well in CL this season. Crashing out against Spurs would be shameful. Semi Finals at least.

Well, it kinda depends on the draw, dont you agree? if we have to pass Barca, City and Psg to reach a final it would be a more acceptable defeat than the likes of Sevilla, Basel and shaktar (impossible i know, hopefully you get my point)

January 15, 2018 will be my 21st birthday as a Juve fan. On that day in 1997 we won 6:1 and (even though a return leg followed) we won my first and Juve's last European trophy
Now, despite the huge win, if you take a look at that team you will see that it had Zidane, Del Piero, a goalkeeper and 8 Matuidis, or 8 (much more) intelligent Sturaros. It was a team created to suck the life out of a game or to simply outrun the opponent.

Nothing's really changed from then on, except that we weren't wining our finals any more. Not counting the 2007-2011 period, from 1997 we were coached by Lippi, Ancelotti, Lippi again, Capello, Conte and Allegri, the very best of Italy and Europe, and with all of them we had the same or very similar psychology. We are simply THAT team. If 5 lost CL finals in a row didn't force a change, nothing will.

I agree with your general point but sometimes we were justified in playing this way (like now) and other times not (like the Capello Era). Capello had the squad to take the game to anyone. Madrid is the probably the only squad back then that was better than ours. Our squad was easily on par with Milan's and it was his choice to make us play this boring brand of football even against equal teams the same way he did with Madrid's Galacticos and with England. He didnt have to play a very tactically disciplined game to make up the gap in quality because there was no gap in quality. If anything we had a better team than almost everyone else on paper.

Conte & Allegri kinda had/have their hands tied behind their backs when facing a top team. Conte's Juve took the game to lesser teams (Roma, Napoli etc..) more than Allegri's but cant take the game to Bayern or Real with Vucinic and Matri leading the attack and so naturally you have to play conservatively and hope for the best.

Allegri is even better at this draining strategy than Conte (he even did it with Milan) and I think thats why we were able to lock heads with Barca and Madrid in the past couple of years and beat both. It wont work everytime because we are the worse squad and the game has to be tactically flawless to win. Simeone too bridges the gap using the same strategy against the big teams but sadly for him too it doesnt work every time. One mistake and fucking Ronaldo or Messi or another asshole (Ramos) will punish you and you are then chasing the game and the strategy is out of the window. Thats when the real gap in quality becomes revealed when we (or ATM) are chasing the game and have to be open.

Our strategy has been a reflection of our coaches. With Conte and especially Allegri it allows us to punch above our weights and be a real nuisance to any team who gets us in the draw. When/If we ever get the same caliber of players that our competitors enjoy then and only then would I see Allegri as limiting us the way Capello did to our old squad. Till then we need that style to bridge the gap.

Juve's philosophy is winning as much as possible in any way possible. And we've been successful at that, except CL finals. Notice, not in CL, but in CL finals.

thats speculative to say the least, you make your own luck they say.

And in the last two finals we lost, we looked so defensive, turtle like and underwhelming offensively, while our opponents attacked us head on. That recipe somehow needs to change if we are to win these types of games.
