Well he's coming to the inevitable crossroads where he has to make the tough decisions. Higuain/Dybala partnership is not justifying the sacrifice in defense right now. They have been underwhelming together since the beginning. Is that on Max or the players, who knows, but it's a different topic.
The problem is Higuain was bought because he is supposed to score goals that other strikers do not score. In such a scenario, it's fine to defend with only 8 players because you will make it up offensively. Right now Higuain is scoring the same goals Matri would score and our team organisation is in shambles.
It's been a while since I've seen such huge gaps in our formation. In transition we are awful. Sometimes the entire backline is exposed. I have never seen our CBs caught in between charging the ball to the striker's feet or hanging back so many times. You only see that scenario when they think they will not be protected by the midfield, so they have to gamble to press the striker and intercept, or the striker will have time to touch and turn. Then the job is more difficult.
Last year it was the same formation but it was different. Cuadrado is drunk right now. Last year, he was like a CM and a RM. Our midfield four was way more compact. They would all be able to form a line and be within yards of each other. This year it is much more like a spread out 4-2-3-1, full out Guardiola 100% attack style.
The solution is 3 CMs instead of 2. Max knows this, surely. But what are his options with 94M Higuain and the "next Messi" Dybala? Like I said before, this is about the only realistic option for these 2 strikers, and this year it's not working.
At the moment our team would be better with Dybala as the lone ST and the rest of the team better organized behind him. But I don't know how this will happen. Unless Allegri goes into full IDGAF mode and knows he's out the door.
