So did Vidal. Even Marchisio had his moments at the AM role. Truthfully they're not cut out for it.
His attributes are better used as a CM seeing he's an inside midfielder with good workrate and short passing who likes to go out wide often. He doesn't offer the supplies and creativity that a TQ ought to have. And certainly not the confidence to dictate every going forward. He's a team player with glimpses of technicality at the right circumstances, not the go-to guy for every attacking play.
There is a reason we're been desperatly looking for a TQ since last season and why we went for Hernanes, even as a last resort.

That I can agree with. He is more suited to the box-to-box role than the TQ. But he isn't strictly one or the other. His performances in the hole provided scoring opportunities, dribbling markers and providing that 'final ball'. Hence Vidal was played in his natural role when Pereyra was chosen to play as AM. Maybe he isn't a top trequartista (possibly a future top CM) but he is a decent one all the same. Except for Hernanes, he has characteristics suited to that role more than any other midfielder in the squad.
He's like a counterfeit Swiss knife. Not exceptionally special at anything, but good enough for many things. A really good player to have for depth.
But honestly, I don't understand how people still fail to see how Allegri does not think he's a pure TQ. Remember when he was first signed how he was given that role, and obviously Allegri didn't like it enough and picked Vidal over him every chance he got.
That should tell anyone that under Allegri Pereyra will never be the first choice AM. More of a last resort, emergency due to injuries/suspensions. Hell, he's not even being picked for the starting 11 this season. Which i think is BS, he's been playing good Football.

I think the reasoning behind playing Vidal as TQ was simply that he had four midfielders who, regardless of their characteristics, were a class above Pereyra. He had no choice but to field those four players in the only way possible - in a Diamond. It wasn't that Allegri didn't see Pereyra as an adequate trequartista, it was just that Vidal, Pogba, Marchisio and Pogba were unbenchable. Besides, playing Vidal as AM gave the side more defensive solidarity against some formidable attacks.
