Kongdongbonbananapong is a defensive midfielder. We got Marchisio and Khedira there. Vidal is a box to box like Pogba. We were missing a cam. And we had quite a bit of wingers+forwards (coman, berardi, dybala, zaza,morata, mandzukic)
If Vidal leaves us behind, we still are well stacked at defensive mids. We'd only have 1 genuine box to box mid, but if we'd sign Götze we'd have the most talented cam in the world under 30.
You could make an argument that we should replace vidal with a b2b mid, but you know there arent alot. You could argue we could sign kongmybongpongdong for cdm and play cheesio or khedira as b2b next to pogba, but that would be a huge step back, as cheesio is a better cdm and a much lesser b2b as vidal, and kongbeforedongpong is far from what marchisio offers at cdm.
playing khedira and marchisio with pogba behind gotze and the wingers/forwards would be by far the best post-vidal choise.
We can play 4321/4312 like this, and we'd have a world class central axis for a 4231 with Pogba, and a world class central axis +world class winger for a 4231 without Pogba
If Vidal must leave us behind, its best to get a cam with that money.

Kondogbia's known for his physicality and defensive duties, but please dont describe him as a old school pure cdm that mainly plays in his own half. Hes a modern midfielder. Massive room for developing further (whether it happens at inter another matter) but a good bet if we look to rejuvenate and sell vidal for whatever reason.

Both Marotta and Vidal gave alot to juventus. We need to know more before we draw conclusions.
But when we look at our team without vidal

licht, chiellini, bonucci, asamoah
khedira, marchisio, pogba
pereyra, dybala
morata/mandzukic
this team, is with problems. Taking away Vidal essentially changes alot. With vidal and tevez we had playmaking, workrate and high aggression, wich meant we could dominate the game, or sit deeper and disturb the buildup from the opponent greatly. This formation will struggle.
We lack aggression high up the pitch, and when building up, only dybala is somewhat a high playmaker. its flawed.
However, instead of adding another cm thats firstly a holding defensive player, when we add a world class playmaker, it changes quite alot. We effectively now get a high paced buildup and counter, meaning opponents cant press to high to quickly, and must build up more organised.
Without vidal, another cdm would do little. adding a high class cm with excellent vision and genius, would not be a step down from vidal, but change the way this team plays

With an attacking mid more of a necessity in mind, after Vidals sale would you be willing to add another highly rated player playing different position and let Allegri adapt his tactics, playing with 3 fwds for example and more muscle in mid, or are you fixated on grabbing whatever caliber AM thats available to us?

Thing is this. Götze is the most talented cam in the world under 30. we dont have a single natural cam, everything we play there used to be a forward or winger, and is about dribbeling, running and receiving the ball, rather then playmaking. its a real missing link we have. There also isnt a single winger out, with comparable talent to Gôtze that we could remotely get. in a normal market, we'd be far from able to get a such a player.
Another thing is the issue with improving the team based on the midfield. When your central midfield is the star, you need wingers that will complement it, rather then limit it. This is rather difficult thing to do. There are bitter few of such wingers about. I can think of Di Maria and Reus and thats about it. However, nearly all the top class wingers, need to be supported.
With Marchisio, Khedira and Pogba, you get this. You can perfectly put a cam in front, because you now only have 1 true b2b instead of 2. You could switch 4231 later from there with or without Pogba. You'd have the cam, and you'd get the promising wingers in.
"planning ahead" in this regard, is seeking the possible current and future formations (imo 4321/4312/4231), and look what you need. Well we got 2 excellent holding mids, we got a pogba, we got talented wingers that arent starters, a great ss talent, and high class forwards.
"planning ahead", is getting the cam that every formation need, because its not in your youth, while it has plenty of wingers.
Oh and berardi and coman arent cam's. Far from having the required skillset for it
