To be fair Del Piero was well passed his prime. His prime came in the late 90's before his injury. Once he lost his speed he was never the same player he was. He could still change a game on his own though but he would have been a force to be reckoned with had he not had that terrible injury which slowed him down.

Del Piero was passed his prime but he was still a top striker none the less in 05/06, he had the touch of a god, the intelligence and he read the game so well. He was still a huge asset to us.
He was definitely past his prime back then. Still great player for us and undeservedly overlooked by Capello during the season, but his peak was around 97-98, one of the best players in the world as I recall it. Then he seemed to gain some of his old game back between 2001-2003, but was never quite the player many had supposed he'd become before THE injury. The fact that he had so many facets to his game allowed him to play at relatively high level even at advanced age and was invaluable player.

Nedved struggled for the most part of 2001/02, but his game heavily improved in subsequent season. His peak imho was 2003-2004, later his game started to deteriorate, but not rapidly and kept on with solid performances for the next 4-5 years.

Emerson and Viera were already on their way down, Viera in particular, plagued with injuries and against Arsenal 17 yo Fabregas made a mockery of him. Never liked him tbh. Both would have probably been replaced during the summer even if it weren't for Calciopolli.

The 2006 team was very good, among the best European clubs and undoubtedly should have achieved better results in the CL. It was ridiculous to struggle against the likes of Bremen, only qualifying thanks to lucky goal after inexplicable error from their keeper. Blame goes to coach there and his inability to adapt to standards of the modern game. Testament to that were 8 Juve players participating in the WC final game, but over course of the next 2-3 year most of them lost their place in top clubs around Europe. Thuram, Cannavaro, Emerson, Viera and Zambrotta all went to obscurity in the following years due to advanced age. Pretty soon we'd have needed some serious overhaul of the team. If I regret for something during that time it's for the fact that we were among top 3-5 clubs with highest revenues and possibility to compete with them on the market.

Tak!
