I suppose what we're seeing is the benefit of experience. Allegri won with Milan because Silva and Ibrahimovic put them above everybody else. To be honest that suits us fine because we're head and shoulders above the rest of Serie A. In Europe he's made some very astute tactical changes which as I say is likely due to his previous experience in continental competition. Zach has mentioned that Milan - Barca game several times and I also remember watching that and being amazed at how well organised Milan were even when on paper they would have been overrun.

Glad we have Allegri plus this squad, things are looking good.

'Juventus will play back four’

Juventus Coach Massimiliano Allegri reveals he will not field a 3-5-2 in tomorrow’s Coppa Italia semi-final with Fiorentina.

The Bianconeri are trailing 2-1 from the first leg in Turin, and while the tactician doesn’t say whether he’ll go with a 4-3-3 or 4-3-1-2, he will not start with a back three.

“I think that we’ll assess things today,” Allegri said when asked about his formation in his pre-match Press conference.

“We’ll play with four [at the back] tomorrow, with an extra attacker, because last time I went to Florence we tried a surprise, we played three and [Fiorentina Coach Vincenzo] Montella knew.

“So someone must have told him. So before anyone can tell him, I’ll tell you [the media]. It will definitely be four. I want to give you the advantage on Montella.

“You’ll all be on your phones trying to find out the formation, and rightly so, that’s your job. So therefore, let me tell you, you know tonight.

“We’ll have four, and then in midfield and attack we’ll see.”

The bigger sides traditionally field weakened teams in the Coppa Italia, will Allegri do that tomorrow, the chance of making the final?

“I’ll put my best team out on the field. [Marco] Storari will play in goal because I gave [Gianluigi] Buffon two days off to spend Easter with his family.

“It was the right thing to do, because he’s played a lot of games. It’s important to work, and it’s also important to rest.

“Storari will play, and as for the rest I’ll decide in training, I’ll see who does well in training to better understand who should play tomorrow.

“We had the international break, we’ve recovered a bit of energy so the team is doing well mentaly and physically.”

The former Milan Coach then reiterated his call for patience from his team, assuring that they do not have to score early.

“In the first leg we did badly on the [first Mohamed] Salah goal. We conceded to a good counter-attack of 60 metres, a solo run, which already happened against Torino [with Bruno Peres].

“It’s a matter of attention, we couldn’t move a metre forward, we moved 100 back the way, and we conceded.

“Playing against Fiorentina is never easy, because they’re a team with good dribblers who keep the ball well, so we have to be patient and know how to take advantage of the opportunities we create.

“Then it depends on how the game evolves and develops. When you’re playing cup games, and especially when there’s a result to overturn, football is not like 30 years ago.

“The passback to the goalkeeper has been removed and changed the game of football.

“Before, in the last quarter of an hour people would leave the stadium, now in the last quarter of an hour in games, anything goes.

“So we have to be very patient, and play our game knowing that we need at least two goals to go to extra time, and then we’ll see what happens.

“It’s not easy, but we have the opportunity to overturn this result.”

Allegri: 'Fiorentina are favourites’

Juventus Coach Massimiliano Allegri admits Fiorentina are favourites, but thinks his side can make the Coppa Italia final.

The Viola emerged from the first leg in Turin with a 2-1 win thanks to a double from Mohamed Salah, meaning that the Old Lady must win at Artemio Franchi tomorrow night.

“We have to go to Florence to try to overturn the negative result from the first leg,” Allegri told journalists in his pre-match Press conference.

“It won’t be easy. At the moment, they’re the favourites, as they have the [first leg] result in their favour.

“They’re going through a good spell, playing good football and getting excellent results, so we’ll have to play an intelligent game.

“We know that we’re facing a team with great technique, which plays well, but we also know that we don’t have to immediately win the game in the first half hour.

“It will be a long game, so we’ll have to pay a lot of attention.

“It’s not easy to win in Florence. For them, as for us, it’s an important game, because it [the final] would be an important goal to achieve.

“We know we have the ability to get two goals, but we could even get them 10 minutes from the end, so we don’t have to get worked up and anxious to immediately overturn the result, because that will absolutely not be simple.

“They’re going through an excellent period.”
What a man :)

Marchisio, Pirlo nearing returns

Claudio Marchisio and Andrea Pirlo are close to Juventus returns, but Massimiliano Allegri is not sure whether to risk the former tomorrow.

The Bianconeri are facing Fiorentina in the second leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final tomorrow, and the Coach told his pre-match Press conference that the injured midfielders will soon return.

“Marchisio is doing well,” Allegri assured.

“He’s returned to the squad, however he’s been working separately. Considering the number of games he’s played from the start of the season to now, I think four or five days out of the team did him some good.

“He’ll be available, so I’ll have to assess today whether to play him or not.

“As for Pirlo, the day after tomorrow he should be part of the group, and then we’ll slowly evaluate his physical condition.

“I’ll assess him once he returns to the group, but the important thing is to have him available. I hope he’ll be in good condition, because he’s done well in training.

“There are still a lot of games between now and the end of the season, I think Andrea has the quality to play in big games, even when he’s not in top condition.”

Mohamed Salah scored twice in the first leg of this tie, and Allegri was asked whether he’d be devising a special plan to nullify the Egyptian.

“I think if we’d have paid a little more attention on the corner for the first goal [in Turin] maybe we’d have avoided conceding.

“That said, Salah is a good player, I think Fiorentina have made a good purchase and did really well out of the exchange [with Juan Cuadrado].”

Without a doubt Allegri deserves another year, and he has impressed me. Nevertheless, I will give him another year before I can truly rate him.
He has changed the system and done so when we desperately needed it too. His hands has been somewhat tied in this aspect with a lot of injuries as you guys mention. He has been more willing to land a hand to our younger players, more willing to rotate and try different things. More adaptive to circumstances and opposition, including during games, (tactically stronger) than Conte. He also has been able to change our attitude in CL, I really enjoyed reading his comment pre-Dortmund away where he said that what we needed was a goal, since Dortmund would score anyway there was no reason to park the bus - we needed to go forward. So there are a lot of good things coming around that I have been happy to see. I also think the team will be stronger after summer mercato when more players suited to his system has arrived.
Still, in serie a our only competition is our hunger to win. I think we all feared the players motivation this year before the season started and not the quality of the team or the competition. On paper not getting a scudetto would have been a big disappointment.
In Europe not getting through group stages would also have been a big disappointment. Dortmund has been very poor this year so even if I was really scared a priori this should have been a win. Now we will be facing Monaco and no disrespect but if we do our job we will go through. Loosing out in the semis will be sad but was never really on the cards until we got lucky to face Dortmund and Monaco.
He has exceeded my initially very low expectations but he has not yet done enough to prove me that he should stay long-term. I am more than willing to let him continue but I will probably wait with my sincere evaluation until after next season.
Furthermore, Conte is a great coach and still young. I would be happy to see him return in the future (but not for the upcoming years). Regarding the summer mercato, we've had a bunch of games where we've struggled to win and where Pogba and Tevez has stepped forward to bring in 3 points based on individual efforts (individual brilliance). I don't mind that at all, big teams can survive on occasions because they have these kind of players. I just hope that we can keep them and realize that quantity can help the team (vast difference right now between our benchers and starters) but quality players can break dead ties.

What gives me great hope that this team can make something in Europe this season (or in coming years) is the courage of Allegri. He actually proved that he's willing to change things when needed, depending on the opponent we play against.

At this point we can keep possesion and press opponents if we want to.

We can also sit back and counter if other teams attacks us (Allegri improved our counters a great deal).

There are three sistems we use right now and all of them proved to be effective when called upon.

Also, our defence has been really good despite playing with back four and despite missing players like Barzagli and Asamoah.

I hope we will invest some money in transfers this summer and build upon these positive factors.

:agree:

I'm thoroughly pleased with Allegri's work as well. I feel that our progression as a top club as been moving with great stride thanks to Mister EuroMax, he has given us the much needed credibility we lacked in Europe, this lack of credibility was so great that we fans had very little hope of accomplishing squat, and last year the lack of self believe was evident in our players game. Big up to EuroMax for revitalizing our side!!
