That event had nothing to do with fashion, and ties, rightly so, are not going out of fashion. It depends on the event you're going to, but a tie definitely makes you look smarter. It was normal for that type of football event for people not to wear ties.

I like wearing a tie that matches nicely between the shirt and blazer/jacket+pants, i think it would suit me more then a bowtie.

Kinda got the idea a bowtie is more for an 'artfull classy type'.
