Caceres wasn't going to take the non-EU spot. He was registered for Juve in the 2009/2010 season as a non-EU player. He couldn't have taken a non-EU spot twice.
He was considered unneeded by Del Neri and we didn't even try to negotiate the 12m eur buy option. Considering how Barca let him leave for 4 times less, if we wanted him we could have bought him for some 6m eur, which is probably less than what we'll pay now.
Point taken. Then again, if the new coach wanted to use him, the new GM would have at least tried to lower the price, I think. They decided to go Italian instead and maybe made a mistake. Now Beppes got a chance to correct one and I hope it will happen, soon.
Its a shame though, as Martin was getting some undeserved criticism, I guess mostly because of that penalty vs Bayern in CL he made. The whole team sucked that year, but some of the players took almost all the blame for it.

Anyways, I liked him here, he worked hard and played with his heart on the field, I would welcome him back, and with Conte as his coach I think he can really develop and explode soon.

It was a high buyout clause and Caceres had injuries as well.

Still, replacing him with Motta made no frickin sense. One of Marotta's biggest mistakes.
Yepp, too bad we realized that later. In the summer the "Motta deal" was considered like some sort of brilliant piece of business by Marotta by most of the fans, me included, if I`m not mistaken (which Im not, as everyone can visit the goat thread and read first several pages)...

You reckon?

I got the impression Delneri had very little say on what was going on with transfers at that time.

I'd say it was primarily Marotta's decision and he's only looking at him now because he's allowing Conte far more influence than Delneri had.

Diego and Trezeguet would have stayed.

That was a shambles. Delneri says that those two are his best forwards and both are sold by the sporting director soon after.
Yeah I remember all the interviews he gave where he said he'd be counting on those two for the upcoming season, and then both were sold just before the season started. Odd. Definitely a Marotta move, he made some absolute blunders during his first ever mercato with us, I'd like to think he has improved quite a bit since then.

those 2 along with saying that dp's contract will end in this year were the 3 biggest mistakes we did post calciopoli

Had a long discussion about this in the Borriello thread.
