Marcello Lippi, head coach of the Italian national team that won the 2006 World Cup and manager of Juventus, which secured five Serie A titles and a Champions League trophy under his leadership, gave an interview to La Repubblica, where he also discussed the current state of the Bianconeri team.

Lippi’s words on Juventus

THE FIRST SERIE A TITLE WITH JUVENTUS – “We were the future. I believe that team already perfectly represented my idea of football: aggressive in every area of the pitch, organized but without the obsession with tactics that has now taken over almost everyone. I had players willing to make sacrifices. The hardest thing is understanding what people have inside them and then training their minds. How they play—that you can grasp immediately.”

HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH JUVENTUS – “What’s so special about it? Its history and the expertise of the people who run it. You truly notice the difference only when you’re inside. And of course, Juventus is not just the most loved team; it’s also the most hated. It’s disliked because it has won so much. And so I say, it’s actually great to be ‘unlikable.’ The Scudetto? I wouldn’t be surprised if Juve got back in the race.”

THE BEST PLAYER – “Mmmm, how can I choose? If I say Del Piero, I can’t not think of Zidane. If I say Zidane, I can’t not think of Del Piero… And then there’s Vialli, whom I miss so much: generous, witty, incredibly intelligent, a champion and a prankster. But also Conte, who was my point of reference. And Pirlo, Nedved, Totti, Gattuso, Gigi… And of course, Roberto Baggio: one of the greatest in history. Did we really not get along? So much has been exaggerated about that—it’s nonsense.
The greatest players I never coached? Maradona, Messi, and Van Basten, I’d say. But the most extraordinary one, whom I only ever saw on TV, was Pelé.”
