Poor game but Samp completely marked him out of the game.

He was he one central player capable of passing the ball and Samp knew it. That meant they'd happily let Rugani and Bremer have the ball with little pressure and they knew Rabiot and McKennie wouldn't make themselves available to pick the ball up from deep instead.

How can you say they marked him when I didn't see one attempt from him to come deep to get the ball and distribute it around?
He hid himself all game behind the first attacker always in a position that made it impossible to receive a pass.
In situations like this Pjanic used to regularly become a 3rd cb for us, because if not he would be marked out of the game.
When the going gets though quality players shine, not crawl themselves under a rock.

To be frank he actually did drop in between the CB’s a couple of times and asked for the ball trying to take responsibility when we seemed clueless but he was so deep and imprecise that he did not actually create anything useful from it or even ended up giving the ball away…

Looked fitter and more clear minded in preseason, now just seems like someone who is a bit blurred in his decision making, hopefully it will get better when playing with better players.

I think in terms of the CM’s he is the least of our problems for now, probably the most reliable overall, nothing exceptional but a potentially very good player in a functional system and formation, which unfortunately we do not have yet.

Sorry but I didn't see that. Had my eyes on his position all game. Whenever I saw him he was behind the striker who marked him.
Never saw him even try to evade his marker, let alone playing technical demanding one two's or linking up with other mids, granted those guys where also hiding behind their markers also.
I also never saw him even trying a pass to the wingers.

He touched the ball 32 times and made only 16 accurate passes, 84% passing success.
Dreadful for a regista. He was basically inexistent.

Hes a good midfielder and we have bigger concerns atm but he wont make players around him shine.
It has become obvious by now.

The only reason I'm harsh with him is because I expect way better from him because I know he has it in him, unlike those other uslless fossils.

I'm very afraid that complacency has reared his ugly head and he seems to let himself go with the flow.
It's like he is afraid to shine so to not offend his fellow co-workers.

Weird how much better he looks when he has technical mids next to him. Hes someone that plays better off of other players and not as the main man....think Scottie Pippen. He would do a lot better with Rovella next to him, or even Paredes I guess.

Rabiot and McKennie are just that bad, next to them even Modric would look mediocre. Mids need synergy and to compliment one another. With what quality Mckennie and Rabiot are gonna compliment anyone ? Its beyond me and my reasoning how this two still getting opportunities.

I hope those Nedved's word are true and do some business in the market. That was said before match, after tonight is even more apparent why we need more players.

Or maybe just maybe he is better as b2b not as a regista. Either play Rovella or get Parades if insists on him in that position.

Yup i also seen exactly what you are mentioning and he should have definitely done better overall, in fact what annoyed me most about him tonight is that when he was further up the pitch and had some space and time on the ball he actually also missed a clear through pass that opened up to Vlahovic as he chose a safe sideways pass option instead(which he even apologized for after as he got called out by him for it on the pitch), otherwise to get back to the main subject as i mentioned before he did indeed drop deep a couple of times to pick up the ball but it was rather very brief and we were sitting way too deep for him to be able to create anything meaningful by himself from there.

I want to skip the argumentation and come directly to the conclusion: play him for any role in the midfield except regista, or he's doomed and we're doomed.
