its probably bullshit though, if he has the citizenship then it should be respected. All you need to do is to be married for at least 3 years or 1,5 if you have kids.
When you fill in the application u have to provide the certificate that you know basics of Italian language (B1 level) and thats all.
So I call this report bullshit either u have the citizenship or u dont, there is no middle ground here for me.

He has Italian flag under citizenship at transfermarkt site, not sure how reliable that is, but that is not out of nowhere, probably no issues with his citizenship

In Spain he would be considered an EU player because of his marriage to an Italian wife, but in Italy that's not sufficient and would have to take an exam as well.

the others reports he will have to pass easy exam from Italian history or something like this, but it shouldnt be hard to do.
Now Football-Italia says the same so it is probably true although not too problematic..
Its absurd to question his nationality as he has a Chiellini in him and we all know he is Italian..
