In a flat 4-4-2 we have great wingth that can be used for effective defense and counterattacking. 1 DM is mandatory (sissoko, melo) and the could be as offensive as the dm+wingers allow. Our wingers seem rather offensive, so we cant have an AMF, but rather a CM (MARCHISIO, POULSEN)
Now where does Diego fits in all this? He doesnt, unless we compromise smth somewhere, with diego in the midfield this translated to either lack in mobility on the midfield or defensive solidarity. Both issues are somewhat adressed (better defenders+ faster wingers)
However it remains THE riddle of the season. A riddle del neri was called to solve rather soon.
If diego stays back, control the game, keeps possesion, marks a bit and provide the forwards with long vertical passes at the back of the opposing defence and some swift passes to the penetrating wingers for counterattacks. This is safe, could be effective but kind of one dimensional.
The other option is to play in the middle, but a bit deeper, so that the lack of speed such an issue and our forwards wont be isolated, or depented to crosses and forced to return for service. Thats the optimal use for Diego there, in a multidimensional front, where his inspirations (surprising vertical passes to either forward, or lobs, short sprints, or long shoots coming from him and the center of our midfield. And and the Brazilian tricky passes to either of ascending. wingers.
Form a large variety of options that cannot be faced not even by the Italian ultra-defensive systems, however, that will leave us exposed in the back and it remains to be seen if our new defense, changed at 2-3/4 can hold.
At any case, Diego will start, we cant use him as a winger and untill we get a prolific finisher, we cant use him as SS either (thats the worst case scenario, imagine us relying on the Amauri-Diego duo, to score, dear God, please DOONT! )

so what's the problem in a 4-1-2-1-2 system? Diego would fit perfectly with amauri and dp/dzeko in front of him and if our defence is good enough it will resist with melo in front of it.

The problem is we don't have elite fullbacks to help in attack.

Argentina played this same formation under Maradona and look what the Germans made out of them.
Maradona had ONE burning issue to address, during qualification, let alone the world cup proper. Which was MAKE A DEFENCE. The offensive areas of midfield and attack pick themselves. But the defence...i don't think Germany have played against a weaker back line in the tournament. Apart from Mascherano, nobody could defend. But its hardly surprising, when they were qualifying and playing at the world cup with a mascot, not a manager, on the sidelines...

Del Neri cracks the Juve whip

Gigi Del Neri is holding four-hour training sessions and long tactical lectures to rebuild the new Juventus.

The former Sampdoria Coach has always been known as a hard task-master and he was fired by Porto before the season began reportedly because the players protested at the tiring schedule.

Considering the sluggish physical fitness of the Bianconeri last term, Del Neri is pushing his men into four-hour athletic training sessions.

According to Tuttosport newspaper, he also sets aside time at the end of the session for basic technique and ball control practice.

He then sits the squad down for long tactical lectures so that they can fully understand his 4-4-2 system.

“This is the fourth season in which I have been a first-team player,” said Paolo De Ceglie.

“We’ve had a good start and are working very hard. We must continue along this road.

“Obviously I hope for an Italy call-up and will do everything I can to earn my place.”

All sounds good, though it is rather sad that there is a need to go through drills on basic technique.

Well, that's good at least. Several players need work on technique. Back to basics is OK with me.

The 4-4-2 sucks though without solid wingers, but hey, this is what we got.

I feel the same as Red, its good to see he knows that we lacked both proper technique and ball control last season, but its sad that we have players at a club as prestigious as Juve who lack these skills.

Solid is about what we got, we need better than solid though.

I don't think Del Neri has to teach them how to play football but he wants them to do in a game what they have been doing in training over and over again
you need technique for dribbling but also for passing and crosses
technique is everything without it how can you be a good player and form a good team

Del Neri feels Juve responsibility Thursday 8 July, 2010

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus' new Coach Gigi Del Neri says he feels a different level of responsibility to when he was in charge of other clubs.

Del Neri has been putting his players through their paces at a training camp in Pinzolo.

Speaking to Sky Italia, he said: “I feel the responsibility of being Coach of Juventus.

“When you train any team like Atalanta, Sampdoria, Chievo or Ternana, you always have objectives: it's obvious that here the bar is set higher.

“I have great respect for the millions of fans who must expect the maximum from us and we will give it.

“A lot has been done on the transfer market, but we have clarified the objectives that we would like to realise. Obviously there can be difficulties but it's Beppe Marotta's job to overcome them. I worry myself with the growth of the team.

“The World Cup has shown that the play of the team is more important than that of the individuals.

“The promise is maximum commitment and maximum professionalism. Juve can't allow itself to have a low profile season, the desire is that of obtaining the maximum.

“We have the job of working towards big objectives and fighting at the highest level. We have all the qualities to do so.”

Meanwhile, Del Neri backed Brazilian duo Felipe Melo and Diego to succeed at Juventus amid speculation that they might yet be sold.

“Melo had a good World Cup, which was stained by the sending off against Holland. We will try to give him confidence. I expect a lot from him.

“Diego is a great player with a great temperament. He must change step, but he has a great chance like all of us.

“Del Piero is a champion. He is a player, not a director. He has his age, but his technical qualities aren't up for debate. He will be dealt with like all the others. He will play if he is in form.”

Almost all our new additions this season seems to know how to speak to the press and boost the fans' morale. I can't wait for our first official match.
