What Del Neri did say was that if Del Piero was fit, he would get a free pass to play no matter what. It isn't quite clear, but it sounds like he will play no matter what over Diego, even if the latter is in better form. That's what it sounded like.

Out of the comments Del Neri has made, these haven't been so good, IMO.

my concern and reading of the comments exactly...up until now, i have been content, even encouraged by Del Neri's comments, but these latest words go too close to confirming Del Piero as a starter whenever fit, whilst at the same time admitting that Dp and Diego can't BOTH play in the same XI...I am glad though, to find more and more juventini, of the same opinion as me, regarding Del Piero : Top teams don't start 36 year olds IN ATTACK. especially physically flimsy 36 year olds, with no pace.

‘Juve lack four players’

Juventus’ new boss Gigi Del Neri has hinted that the club’s summer spending has yet to end as he still needs four new players.

The Bianconeri have been the most active Italian team in the transfer market, signing Marco Storari, Leonardo Bonucci, Jorge Martinez, Simone Pepe and Marco Motta for €32m.

Speaking from the club’s training camp in Pinzolo, Del Neri said: “We are still incomplete. We lack an winger, a centre-back, a full-back and a striker if one leaves.”

Del Neri then elaborated on his position on Diego, the Brazilian playmaker, who doesn’t appear to suit his tactics.

“Diego is a deep-lying second striker. He is a Cristiano Doni: for me it’s not a novelty to play this way. Time will tell if I am right. But he is not in competition with Iaquinta. The role is the same, but they are different. Diego doesn’t have Iaquinta’s penetration and Iaquinta doesn’t have Diego’s qualities.

I think maybe Alex will sit higher up, but still slightly back from SS, when Diego plays he will sit further back than Alex.

He was and a very good one when he had pace. He takes too much time on the ball now and is easily dispossesed. Also he tries to dribble 19 people without releasing the ball quick enough.

I think Alex in the Delneri formation is a bad idea anyway, like I said he'll either sit too far back and be useless go even further back and fail even more.

I think Diego does have the 'penetration' if by that he means surging forward to get a shot off. He doesn't have IQ's pace but he can go forward well enough, it's just he's always kicked off the ball ala Giovinco.

Unless we are mistaken and we have the interpretation wrong, but that doesn't seem to be the case. What else could he mean?

I fail to understand what Del Neri meant by any of that. He says Iaquinta and Diego play the same position, which is obviously not the case. Yak plays further up the pitch.

Some of these comments are frankly worrying. He doesn't seem to understand how to use the players correctly. I mean, it is Del Neri after all, so I wasn't expecting much from him. But at least understand what positions these guys play FFS.
