Zizou rejects Matrix link-up
Zinedine Zidane has refused to star alongside Marco Materazzi in a Europe XI which will take on Manchester United tomorrow night.
The Frenchman, who ended his career by being sent-off in the World Cup Final for head-butting the Inter stopper, had been asked to take part in the Old Trafford commemorative tie.
But the former Juventus player rejected the opportunity despite having the chance to work under Marcello Lippi, his former Delle Alpi tactician, for another 90 minutes.
"UEFA sent the invite, not me,” said Lippi who will take charge of the European XI side. “But it came back negative at the last minute.”
The game is being staged to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and will also see players such as Barcelona's Ronaldinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic of Inter appear.
Full Europe XI squad – Goalkeepers: Oliver Kahn, Grégory Coupet, Iker Casillas.
Defenders: Paolo Maldini, Jamie Carragher, Eric Abidal, Lilan Thuram, Carles Puyol, Marco Materazzi, Fabio Grosso.
Midfielders: Gianluca Zambrotta, Steven Gerrard, Juninho Pernambucano, Florent Malouda, Luis Miguel, Gennaro Gattuso, Andrea Pirlo.
Strikers: Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Amantino Mancini, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrik Larsson.
