Jaunty to Karmic was the first distro upgrade I tried, and it failed on me. I got a whole bunch of cryptic error messages, and some of the updates didn't complete correctly so I had a freak Jackalope-Koala hybrid.

A fresh install is always nice :)

Did you update Jaunty before upgrading to Karmic?

I think he's referring to the splash screen.

From the Ubuntu forums:

The *buntu usplash screens packages are called:

usplash-theme-ubuntu
xubuntu-artwork-usplash
kubuntu-artwork-usplash

you get the idea...just search synaptic for usplash

Remove the ones you don't want to use and reinstall the one you want to keep.

I had installed then removed KDE but was still left with the Kubuntu usplash. Removing kubuntu-artwork-usplash got me back to the Ubuntu usplash.

You could also try installing startupmanager if you want to manually change your usplash screen.

Nah.

As a remnant of my Windows mentality, I've always done a fresh install. Feels nice, ya know? ;)

Yes, I read that thus my question. What will they gain from that? Each time I type "sudo" in console, they receive a penny or what?

Theoretically, yes. If it were enforced and all that crap. But patents are the nuclear missiles of today's world. Every company has them. If you sue for a patent claim you'll get counter sued, there's no avoiding it. That's why the only companies that are making money from patents in that way are suitcase terrorists. Companies that produce nothing, therefore they can't be sued over their own products. All they do is own patents and sue. They're called patent trolls.
