Yeah it's a little annoying to launch movies from the shell. I never use subs so I never have to.

Btw if you always use subs in the same language you can set that in your mplayer.conf and never have to pass the argument on the command line.

$ cat /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf | grep slang
#slang = en

Remove the '#' and set whatever language you want.
