I've finally got Ubuntu alternate version on a disc... Now I'm planning to install it in a fresh drive (F: )... do I need to take backup of C: too to be on the safer side?

i backed up everything valuable before i switched to Ubuntu last year. but i think as long as your partitions are set then you should have no problem losing your data on a separate drive

TBH, I never backed up ANY of my data when installing another OS, be it Linux, Windows, or even that brief moment when i tried to install Mac OS X umpkin:
You have to make sure your burning software 'knows' that you're burning a CD image to a DVD. Most good burning software will automagically figure this out for you.
I think you'll get an error and it won't burn at all if your software is unhappy with you.

Funny thing is my father used those Zip disks until about a year or so, when I finally decided to introduce him to USB flash. I figured, he knows how to use those, why mess with it? But the disk grew too small.

The zipdisk was a terrible product. It hit the market just before cd recorders became common. So why would anyone buy a zipdrive? The capacity was much less.

The guy who sold my Dad the finance program for his company, sold him a zip drive as a "handy back-up product". It's not hard to sell my Dad anything computer related.
