Okay, so here it starts again. But this time I'm determined to make it work...

So I installed Ubuntu 9.04 using Wubi. All went well until the installer completed the installation. Then I got a black screen with a cursor (the same problem I had last time). I thought maybe I should wait and wait I did. For about 40 mins. Then I decided to forcefully power off my laptop and restart. I got the option of booting with Ubuntu. Now I get the linux terminal but no GUI. I can log in using the details I had specified before the installation began.

I'm guessing xorg croaked.

Errors should be reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

use "| grep EE" for critical errors only.

Log in and try $ startx and tell us what it says.

For Tommy

Martin, correct me here if I send wrong information.

Linux as an operating system is the kernel. Xorg is an application that gives you the visuals. Then you have another application that gives you a desktop environment. That's a major difference from Windows where the desktop environment is an inseparable part of the OS. On Linux the desktop environment is a separate application that your computer can function properly without.

So when we say Ubuntu, you have the Linux kernel, you have Xorg and you have by default a desktop environment called Gnome (which is what you see in front of you right now). Kubuntu is the exact same kernel and Xorg as Ubuntu but it has another desktop environment as default (it's the one I see in front of me right now and the one you saw in the screenshot I posted).

I can install Gnome on my Kubuntu and experience what you are experiencing and you can install KDE on yours and experience what I am experiencing. Of course my desktop has been customized as the default KDE does not look like the one I am having but that's just a simpler story that can be achieved by just modifying the looks.

Wouldn't you say it was worth the risk :D
Hell yeah!

I'm not innocent either, two months later I already had a conversion attempt on one of the guys which, thankfully, didn't fail 100%. He just went ok, I have no time to tweak but I guess when I do I will definitely try it again.

I used to experiment on machines in the house when I was starting out. It's just necessary for learning, people should be more understanding :D
