well, i edited /etc/network/interfaces and added ip, netmask and gateway in there.

did you restart the network after that?

i remember the last time i had to mess with this, i had to enter my gateway into the resolv.conf file to get it to work. i did it this time, and it didnt work! i tried 'ifconfig eth0 down' and 'ifconfig eth0 up' also, but that didnt help.

No, the network service. /etc/network/interfaces is just a config file, editing that won't take effect until you
# /etc/init.d/networking restart
