ipw4945 maybe? The wireless stack in the kernel has been rewritten recently, meaning more common stuff goes into the kernel, and the code for each driver becomes smaller. This is a good thing, long term. But it's also a transition period and I have had plenty of weirdness with my ipw3945 (or iwl3945 as the new driver is called), a card that comes with most Intel based laptops. Even on 2.6.27-10 I still get disconnected from the network for no apparent reason now and again. I'm guessing the wonky driver is the source of your problems here.

You can find out what card you have with lspci:
$ lspci | g -i network

Mine says:
04:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)

EDIT: kudos :D

I am now connected via my wireless adapter but not on my router, why can I connect on other routers but not mine?
Is it possible it has something to do with geography? I know it sounds crazy but maybe you're sitting in a place where the signal is particularly weak from your router.

Wrong network setting maybe? Your card should pick up a/b/g I bet, so it seems unlikely.
Where in the settings should I tamper to find the signal?

Not really, it just recquires some patience, a LiveCD and lots of questions. It'll be only a matter of months and you'll feel smart.

I guess the router admin has a setting for the network "type" or something like that. There have been three wifi standards so far, a b g, each new letter meaning a faster network. There's a new standard coming called n, but it's not finalized yet, yet hardware is being sold already for it. Once you start mixing n routers into networks most of the old network cards won't work at n speed, they should still fall back on g speed though, so no big issue.

I bet this isn't your problem, I'm just clutching at straws here.

Yeah.
What is it that you do for a living? I guess it's something computer related, but i've never asked you.
Bound to be, I'm still a student though. My degree is in software engineering, so I'm one of those people who do computer systems for businesses or desktop programs that everyone ends up hating :D

To give you an idea, I've written some fairly insignificant stuff to date, like this:

And what is the plan after you finish the studies?
Do you have a job guarantee and do you plan to have a fulltime job which requires waking up early in the morning, going to work etc, or will you work from home?

These are probably silly questions but i'm not familiar with these things and i know some people who work with computers and they earn a lot sitting on their chair at home and wearing their pijamas.
