Never did like mplayer much. I liked some other programs that are based on it, like KMplayer, much better.

One thing I always hated in mplayer was volume control. When I'd turn down volume in it, it would automatically turn down the volume of the whole system. Then I'd close mplayer and have practically no sound unless I turned it back up in kmix.

Yep, that is annoying, but it has to do with the lame sound situation in linux in general. Same thing if you play two movies in mplayer then the volume in one affects the other etc.

But as for permanently setting the master volume, I don't think it does that anymore. I think once it exits it's reset.

I haven't been on Linux in months.. I just checked Ubuntu's web, seems the new version is out tommorow, I think I'll give Kubuntu a whirl.

I mean yeah, I've been using Mplayer too, but I got curious because these guys are against it.

I use VLC. At very rare occasions I use Kaffeine.

My first few ventures in Linux consisted of mainly reinstalling the OS over and over again.

In all the excitement of tweaking different things, learning new stuff, I regulary messed something up and couldn't boot into the system again. A fresh install is usually done in a jiffy so it was no biggie, though.

well it is a virgin machine and i haven't had the time to download very much anyway, all my media etc is still on my old machine. brand new ubuntu? why not

aah.. all those times i had to reinstall linux due to messing up the video driver or something like that!

one thing i remember was that updates almost always messed up the OS! i hated that!

Do you know what it says on Saudi Arabia's flag? Substitute Buffon and Manninger in the relevant places and you get the picture

btw do you guys use a separate partition for /home and /data? It sounds like a good idea in theory, but I haven't tried it before.
