Is it worth the transition? It completely depends on you! If you are willing to learn something new, not afraid of change, and up for a challenge, then yes it is worth it. If not, then no, unless you know someone else that could configure your Linux to fit your computing needs.

god how many times i have heard this reply it's amazing, it's like the linux users' official moto or something.
though it is true, if you're not willing to put in a effort it's not worth it.

anyway i don't think it applies to zambrotta as he said he's been using it at the university and is enjoying it.

Well that box is configured already for general use... Thats why I suggested to let someone do it for him if he doesn't want to...

Anyways Zambro doesn't look like a guy that would shy away from a challenge

Ugh, Dyne:Bolic..

Its only saving grace was/(is?) that it boots live on my xbox as well.. pretty ugly gui, and very limited, but still, one of the better distros aimed at lower-end PCs.. (hence the xbox)

IMO the simpler the use the simpler the transition. You would most probably have to give up gaming though, depends on what games you playing.

So in any case its worth it, how you go about it is what differs.

The games I play are Railroad tycoon II and III. Sometimes PES 6 but I could give up on PES. Do they work on linux?

just installed Dreamlinux....
this has got to be the most impressive distro i have tried in a while, not only is the eye candy by far the best i have seen, i am a sucker for silver-blue-mac-like themes, it is also really functional and customizable. everything set up out of the box.

so far i am really pleasently surprised.

Here's my post in the Ubuntu forums... I figured I'd probably get a better response from one of you geniuses:

Okay, here's the situation:

I'd successfully been dual booting Windows XP and Ubuntu, but I decided to do some reshuffling of my hard disk space.

I fired up the GParted Live CD, and started my operations. (see screenshot) I reduced the size of hda5 from 15GB to 500MB, because it wasn't in use. Then I used the freed up space to increase my NTFS partition to 10GB. All was going well until I decided to merge the remaining free space with hda6 (see screenshot). While that was happening, my laptop switched off for no reason at all.

When I turned it on again, Grub gave me an error 17 report and hung there.

I booted the Gparted LiveCD and tried again, but every time I tried to do anything with that partition, GParted would just close by itself. This happened when I tried it with the GParted LiveCD, the system rescue disk, and the Ubuntu Live CD.

sudo grub

grub> root (hd0,5)
grub> setup (hd0)

   Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no
   Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no

Error 2: Bad file or directory type

I tried all the other possible (hd0,*) entries, but that just tells me "cannot mount selected partition"

The contents of my /etc/fstab are as follows:

unionfs / unionfs rw 0 0
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nosuid,nodev 0 0

I've tried the advice in about 50 threads, with no luck. Most of the threads concerning this problem say that one should edit this and that inside their /boot/grub directory, but there is no directory in my /boot named "grub"

In other news, I used the Supergrub disk and managed to boot into Windows, but my Linux partition isn't looking in very good shape

i can imagine.

ok here's the rundown on dreamlinux: really quick, faster than ubuntu, pretty as a mac, but has quite a few issues. it's a really promising distro but there's still a long way to go for them.

well be sure to try it out, you have already almost downloaded it, it is a good distro, definetly worth a shot. though don not expect it to be better than ubuntu or something, it is not even in the same leauge, though it is promising.

i had some minor difficulties like not being able to change my keyboard layout, internet connection not starting at boot-time, drives not mounted on boot...all those things are fixable very easily, i am sure, but do not work out of the box, at least for me.

though some other stuff like .mp3, movies and such work out of the box, unlike ubuntu.

and support is hard to find, their forums are on portugese, there is a english section as well but it does not seem to lively.
