I've tried installing Vista on a usb external drive, it won't allow you. I bet it's the same with all Windows products.
That's interesting. What did it say?

I must try it some day with XP, but I don't have any usb drive large enough.

Even if you could get around it though, as I said, you'd probably be screwed by the ever tightening noose of WGA. It'd be fine until you tried booting on another system, then BANG, you're a pirate.

Something like "Windows cannot be installed onto a usb disk". The thing is that with Vista, they only allow you two activations. So if you install it, upgrade your system (and Windows detects hardware has changed), you can activate it one more time. Then it's curtains. So they obviously don't believe that installing on a usb drive can be any kind of reasonable use of Windows.

The Windows licence had me seriously thinking of going all Linux during the summer. My old machine had given up the ghost, and rather than get it fixed, my mother wanted to buy a new computer.

I got a nice enough system, no OS, thinking I could just use the copy of Windows from the old computer. Nope - come activation, I was told that the licence is non-transferable. I didn't argue - I was sure I'd get nowhere (later, reading the EULA, it turned out that it was explicitly stated). I figured, screw it I'd just install Ubuntu.

My mother and little brothers were distraught though - they're all clueless about computers, and the sight of a shiny new Ubuntu desktop had them... well, you've seen 2001, A Space Odyssey. I bought a new copy of Windows, under duress, and ever since, the computer has been a source of misery. I'm told that it's not booting right now. I'm away for a couple of weeks, so it'll sit there, smug in its Microsoft-containing aura of crapness.

Anyway, end of ramble. Just thought I'd share.

As it happens, I left my desktop back home when I moved here, installed Windows so they could call me on skype. Over the summer I replaced Windows with Ubuntu, apparently it's working fine, I'm pleased.

Disgraceful. ;) It's worth seeing just to watch the result of the conversation:
Stanley Kubrick (director): This dialog sucks.
Arthur C. Clarke (screenwriter): I know. I can't write dialogue.
SK: Okay... what if we just get rid of it all...

We should skype: feels odd to have known you this long without ever speaking! I can't here though.

Gosh that brings back memories, it was Graham the skypemaster who launched that whole movement which is totally dead now I think. Are you on msn anymore? We could pick a time that fits.

John, I thought you can't use Linux due to family reasons, I never knew you are a user and that was my remark for. Sorry

Oh! You had me confused. You're partially right. I'm limited by family, but not completely chained to the Redmond Device.

I just updated, I am posting from 610 and I love it. I never thought it would make such a difference, but guess what, it did.

I use kubuntu and I must say KDE 3.5.5 is beautiful, it gives pleasure by just looking at it :D

does anyone else this problem in kubuntu; running apps, through the k-menu, with kdesu doesn't work sometimes? i had this problem in badger, dapper and still in edgy. for example the KCC when run from the menu sometimes start sometimes it doesn't. in edgy this also happens when trying to run automatix2. i know there are a few folks on ubuntuforums.org that have this problem as well, wondering is it like that for everyone..

I don't know what you are talking about but I've been trying to install kuickshow for the past half an hour and it is as impossible as sending a file via kopete.
