Just kidding, I'll go do some research and get back to you with a decision, though I'm a bit sick of downloading and burning ISO's already

The difference is simple
ubuntu uses gnome environment kubuntu uses kde environment.

By the way, I couldn't resist the urge to try out Ubuntu using the Live CD before installing it on my HDD, so I'm proud to announce that this is my first post using my new OS of choice (yes I'm already sold on Ubuntu after using it for about 5 minutes )

If it helps, I'm suck on a CentOS system for the next couple of weeks. It's fairly good, but I don't have the priviliges to <strike>screw up</strike> fiddle with it. I miss my bookmarks, spam filter, documents, software and everything.

As soon as flash drives are competing with hard drives for memory space (30GB is tonnes for me anyway) I'm switching to running an entire system off one. I hate being non-portible.

Lots of people are doing that right now, mik. I've seen tons of howtos on how to run linux off a flashdrive, even down to 256mb. You can still mount your harddrive and access whatever is there.

Oh, I know you can put an OS on one now, but I want to put everything on one. No messing about with a big external hard drive. I couldn't be bothered synching everything with a server either, and that assumes you've got a fast connection everywhere (though that's mostly true).

yeah, i read somewhere that you could export all your settings and data to a flash drive, then boot using live CD, restore the settings on the flash drive and use ubuntu with actually installing it!!!

Well, regardless of the live-CD, I imagine you could get Windows to boot off a flash drive alright, unless their licence forbids it. I have a feeling you might get screwed on WGA though.

Ergh, here I am back in Windows (I cringed as I booted it up again) to continue the painstaking process of backing up all of my data onto blank DVDs (I've used up the 160Gb on my iPod and external HD :embarasse))

I'm hoping to get everything onto external storage, wipe my drive (ahhh int and get this show on the road by the weekend

I've tried installing Vista on a usb external drive, it won't allow you. I bet it's the same with all Windows products.

Man, I reckon I have two gigs of papers, and that's before I start to think about the OS, software, images, local copies of websites, music... yeah, you can do it now, but it's still a bit Spartan for what I'm thinking of.
