It's really just the top of the iceberg. Did you know that 3 years ago Berlusconi signed a "pact of friendship" with Libya, which was ratified by the Italian parliament only 2 years ago, in which among other things was the promise of non-aggression but also that Italy would oppose any NATO military action against Libya, no matter what the situation in Libya might be?

As part of this "social exchange" only few months ago Geddafi was in Rome and gave an apparently delirious speech on his own interpretation of Islam, for which they hired 500 young women to come listen, later giving interviews to the Italian press about how impressed they were with the speech.

And this "pact", while it has been abandoned by certain high officials in the media ever since the current crisis began, was never officially cancelled.

Not only that, the Italian government also rendered similar services to Ben Ali in Tunisia, who first helped by then prime minister Craxi later received Craxi, by then running from the law in Italy, who remained in Tunisia until his death.

I think the overall idea is that Italy is a corrupt place because of it's history. So I guess that really isn't all too surprising.

Another interesting fact is that this pact of friendship was voted in by both the right wing anti-immigrant racist types and the democratic party, ostensibly the opposition.

The tragedy of Italian politics is that the opposition is almost as bad if not equally bad as the current leadership. In the recent regional election in Napoli for the democratic party the corruption was rampant. And this is at the lowest level, where an elected politician has very few favors that he can trade. But already then it takes root.

French minister has admitted that they are leading a crusade.

''Regarding the criticisms that have been made of the President…, now everyone realizes that we are fortunate that he [Sarkozy] was there. The whole world was getting ready to watch massacres committed by Gaddafi on the television. Fortunately, the President took the lead of the crusade, in order to mobilize the United Nations, and then also the Arab League, and the African Union.''

Crusade means simply a campaign. :)

Or their subconscious desire.
Desire to do what, spread Christianity in the Muslim lands? :D

I still don't believe they care about people getting killed by Gaddafi.
Individually some probably care. They are human after all. But the political interest leaves little space for "caring about the killed in Libya".
France, England, Italy, Norway etc have fat contracts with Libya for its oil and what's happening there is hurting western European interests. Europe now needs Gadaffi taken out. Libyan people want the same but they can't do it on their own and they don't want to die, which is going to happen and is happening with Gadaffi there.
You are obviously strongly against NATO interfering in Libya, but what's your suggestion of what should be done? Let the Libyans handle Gadaffi or back up and let him rule?

I don't know about him, but believe it or not, there are some Turks who are worried that Christianity might be spread in Turkey, for that they kill any Christian missioners that step to Turkey :D

Gaddafi's days are numbered, he will go one way or another but a foreign dictatorship could be permanent. Once USA or Europeans decide to occupy country what will Libyans do? Telling them ''fuck off'' won't work. Libyans should change their submissive attitude because those ''helpers'' will want something in return.

    Turk,

Why do you think Qadhafi is better than foreign occupation? Both of them is horrible, mate...

Qadhafi isn't better. Problem is some people in Libya seem to forget how horrible those saviours could be. If French want to deal with Qadhafi or USA want to spent 300m € in 3 days let them do. Just don't invite them so they can't demand compensation.

When you are under fire, you will be ready to ally with the devil in order to protect yourself, simply.
