Bonucci review 2010/11
Played 38 games.
In only his second full season in serie A, Leonardo showed glimpses of true quality as often as glimpses of inexperience and a need to mature as a footballer. Seemingly comfortable on the ball, solid in the tackle and capable of dealing with aerial threats, his reading of the game also appeared encouraging for a youngster. What makes measuring his performances this season so incredibly difficult is the total failure of both fullbacks for the majority of our games home and away. He was too consistently asked to make up for the inadequacies of Motta. His partner in the middle, big Giorgio Chiellini was having to play left back AND centre back, due to the shockingly anaemic showings of Grosso, which opened up more space in the middle for opponents to exploit. Sorensen's appearances made Bonucci look better, understandably so given that the young Dane was basically a third centre back bunching up next to the official two centre backs. Continued selection for la nazionale, where he will be playing again, with Juve colleagues Buffon, Chiellini and Marchisio, can only help to aid cohesion between goalkeeper, defence and midfield. I have high hopes for Leonardo, and bearing in mind this was only his second season in the top flight, and we played most the season without fullbacks, I am content with his efforts. Much more will be expected of him next term, but with the Nazi Liechtensteiner set to shore up the right, and Ziegler to do the same on the left, finally...after several seasons, we will have, potentially, a solid back four.
