Not sure if this warrants a new thread, but since I was unable to find one serving the same purpose I started one anyways.

Need to get a new Laptop for about $1000. Its not for myself, but for a friend of mine. Primary function of watching movies and browsing the internet. Ideas?

Edit: Started it in the wrong subforum. Can someone move it to the Science and Technology one? Thanks.

Build a desktop instead :p

Dunno man, Maybe and Acer of a Toshiba.

That'll have to do until Martin gets here.

The Aspire 5940G Core i7 has a 15.6" HD screen, 4gb ram etc. I'd go with that.

Thread moved and I recommend you look at Acer, they have good machines for erasonable prices. I cannot point out one for you because of the currency and market differences, it won't be fair.

I do, They're light weight and pretty good yet their main problem is the Battery as after two months or so (even with taking care of the laptop and only charging it when needed) the battery soon becomes needless and the laptop will require to be attached to the charger when used.

I recommend a Dell laptop but only a new one that is from the modern models. They're pretty good yet their prices are a bit expensive.

My personal expiriences with Toshiba isn't good. I would pick Acer, I had two Acer laptops with no bad expirience and I liked them more then the others I used.
Every manufacturer has or has had some duds, unavoidable. Brand names mean very little, it's the models that matter, subcomponents are all from subcontractors anyway, Toshiba or Acer don't make anything, they just put the pieces together.

Asif, I would go with either MSI, Lenovo or ASUS. Both MSI and ASUS are known for their parts that go into most other laptops and their own branded notebooks are well worth the price. But Lenovo Thinkpad is the hands-down best notebook you can buy. I have a Thinkpad for work which my firm gave me and I liked it so much that I got one as my personal computer as well.

It's a well rounded machine with quality parts and performance.

Not really, some Chinese kid puts the pieces together for them and gets paid nothing.

    No way man

Both HP and Dell are the worst possible brands for consumer and business products. They use cheap parts and make cheap builds
Indeed, Dell is complete trash. My Dell laptop fell to pieces almost as soon as I bought it.

And not only that, Dell has been selling junk for over a decade, the only thing they have going for them is cheap prices and a website where you can customize everything.

Well its quite fitting of Dell to create inferior products since the company was started in someones garage using spare used parts of old computers to build their first line of PC's that they sold to the public.

    And the saga continues...
